Here's an 1834 Classic Head Gold Coin I bought in June at a local coin show I went to. I had been looking for one, so when I ran across this one I felt I had to snatch it up! I wanted to show it off here sooner but I've been having problems with my pics. The grading company isn't anyone to brag about for sure but that's okay as I bought the coin, not the slab. I hope my pics work! If you have a Classic Head, post a pic I love the series! https://coinweek.com/us-coins/us-go...o-collect-classic-head-half-eagle-gold-coins/
Congrats! I'm glad you recognize the "slab" is completely dis-reputable. However, the coin appears to be genuine, and generally problem free. XF-40 is quite optimistic, but if you paid a VF price then you are ok.
Very nice looking but I think this grading service over graded it by one grade. If the price was right, I’d have bought it.
Yes, I agree on the grade but the coins really nice and the price was way better than the other seller there that day. I think I did pretty well on the price as well. I had to go out of my way to buy it as I looked at a couple other coins including another Classic Head that was way over priced and it looked terrible! The vender I bought the coin from didn't take Visa and the ATM was out at that location so I happily traveled a couple of miles away to an ATM and pulled out the cash and quickly went back to buy it! I'm happy with it!
I bid on a Classic Head quarter eagle but was outbid. You'd think they'd be half the price of the half eagles but apparently not. I may try getting it but these are popular types & I don't have high hopes.
Take a look at this beauty that sold, I was bidding on it before my hair was blown back by all the bidders with mo money! A crosslet four and the grade made it a big ticket item! https://www.ebay.com/itm/1848788984...=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
I like the classic head gold too. I only have one half eagle. I bought it for spot several years back. Somebody had scraped a small X on the obverse. I’ll tease those every time.
Like Randy, I only have one also. Mine is a VF, about the same grade as the OPs. I bought it from a local dealer I help with ancients. Went to see what he had, he had this new into the shop, so I bought it on a whim.
Here's my 1836 quarter eagle, I wish I could collect more but my classic head coin collection ends here!
I don't post this one too often but it comes 2nd to my 2.50 indian, but this one was just so pretty I couldn't pass her up and got her for just over melt...
I once sold a $5 gold piece ( hard to believe I know) Was at a local coin club meeting and it had been sitting on ebay for a bin at $400. I'd been leaning towards picking it up all day... ( clean looking coin at almost spot) I showed another member and he mentioned that he would like to have it but wouldn't have the money together for a few months. He didn't have any gold and always wanted one. ebay had a 10% off program so I snapped it up. I told the member when he got his money together he could have it for the same spot price at the time) that I spent. I brought it in next meeting and 6 months later he had his money together, bought his first gold piece. 1900 gold $5 piece...spot was $430 so everyone made out good. I took the 10% ebay bucks and put them towards an 1873 open 3 for close to spot and got a few more ebay bucks to continue the cycle.
I liked it better raw. Of course a 2x2 holder with staples is very dangerous for coin storage. Perhaps a custom plastic holder would be nice...
It's graded now and it's in the ANACS holder. The cardboard flip pic was when I first received it years ago.
