Well I'll tell ya what Speedy - when you are ready to add to your gold collection - I own the lowest graded 2002 $50 AGE there is. I figure it would go G 8 to F 12 right about now. A little more time and it'll be G 4 or lower Think of it - a POP 1 coin
US gold coins of yesteryear are STILL just bullion to a lot of peope,l around the world. I have heard of hoards fo $20 St. Gaudens down in S. America and elsewhere. Of course, trhey are worth more as collectors items, but they have ben in vaults for decades as bullionand until someone sells them off, taht is what they are seen as.
BTW – I love the SEs. (I would love the gold ones, too, but they are a bit pricey). They are a first rate coin all around, and worthy of being collected. I remember the great battle that was necessary to get the US to issue bullion coins. And now, they can’t sell enough of them. Other countries still give the US a run for it’s money in regard to gold bullion, but for silver, I think the US has them beat. The other silver coins are nice, but many are in the collector realm only (UK Britannia, for example). As expensive as the SE is, it is the closest to bullion value when first issued as far as I kniw. In regard to “circulated” SEs, if I had an AU coin I would wear it down to G or AG then have it slabbed and then put it on ebay as a great rarity. Here’s the question: If you used mechanical means to get it to VG or so, then wore it down naturally to AG or G, would the slabbers know?
I recently completed a collection of SAE's in a Dansco album. I would guess they are all around 68 or 69, all really nice coins. Buillion or not, I think it is one of the most visually impressive pieces in my collection (can't afford to collect gold). IMO the design is second only to Saints and it is one of the few coins that the mint appears to have taken some real pride in properly producing. Steve
Ain't that the truth. When is the last time (never?) you got "business strike" coins that routinely grade in the mid to high 60s? Also, I woul dlove to see a 2 ounce SE. Ithink the Mint could do it easy enough. Anyone here on the Forum a Senator or Congressman, by any chance??
I would love to see the mint add palladium to its bullion issues! Many European countries use palladium (poor mans gold) as it is a precious metal. We would then be complete with gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Actually it probably would sell much better than platinum ever has! We have the purest palladium in the world and it is all in our one mine in Montana! I have purchased a couple of the palladium rounds (tenth ounce) and put away for the kids and would love to continue if they were good ole USA Mint products!
Bingo! That is the answer. The Senators and Congressman from Montana are the ones to convince, and it will get done.
If you are interested in Palladium, you might be interested in learning a little about this metal. Hope this helps: http://www.stillwaterpalladium.com/
A POP 1 coin would be great....so far I have 1 coin that NGC has only graded 2 in that grade! But its not a rare coin or grade so I guess there will be more! Speedy
