Mint to demand would be the best option for true collectors but not those looking to make a quick buck or big dealers. It's also produced many coins that hold there value very well because they have demand to match and not artificially inflated demand for a short period before they sink like rock. Imo the 2013 ASE set was dead in the water because people overbought and created oversupply blinded by dollar signs thinking it was going to be like the 2011 25th set all over again.

Mint to demand just cheapens products to a lot of people. Mint to demand could work if the premiums where slightly above the bullion premiums, but to charge a normal premium and do that no thanks I'll get it cheaper later.

Which is really the problem. If they mint to demand no one wants it. Dealers are their main customers by far, I know a lot of people don't want to believe that but the dealers do the majority of the work for the mint creating demand for things. If the dealers said we won't order anymore sales would plummet and most of every mintages would go unsold or melted.

Collectors today want quality with beautiful designs, hence world moderns are becoming far more popular.

Does anyone know yet what coins will be in the set? One from each mint (S, W, and (P))? How about that elusive "D?"

Not a chance you are right about that. Yes, of course there are MANY folks who do not know what a silver eagle is. No CHANCE that is the same number of people who never heard of these medals. Or even close.

I have family members who get one ASE every year for their "collection" and they never heard of these medals and most of the other "stuff" the mint releases ("you mean they have coins with Presidential spouses on them?"). There are a lot of folks like that out there. They have been making ASEs every year for more than 30 years and a LOT more people are aware of them after all this time and a smaller number who collect them than these medals which just came out recently.

What makes you think that the mint's goal is to sell as many as possible?

The Treasury Secretary and the CCAC do not get paid one red (or even brown) cent more if "the mint" sells more coins, nor do they suffer any consequences when the Mint lays an egg because they picked an unpopular design.

These folks are largely politicians, and they have other agendas. To wit . . .

Are they trying to promote a goal of a "more contemporary look" or to sell as many coins as possible???

Do you think that was because they wanted to sell as many as possible? Or perhaps do they other other agendas?

    Bingo.

Once all those hidden agendas have had their say and the product is released they want to sell as many as possible, or at least used to. The past year has been failure after failure and next year will largely be as well

    Agreed.

All I am saying is that, IMO, the "failure after failure and next year will largely be as well" is largely attributable to those other agendas that lead them to choose a lot of unappealing designs. And because they keep on promoting designs based on other agendas, rather than designs which are optimized to sell, it seems to me the other agendas are more important than sales.

I view those as separate issues. The design process ect completely agree. Once it's on sale they want to sell the most. Granted by that point there may be nothing they can do to do that, but even then they make some terrible decisions.

Really IMO what we all just need to accept is that that US mint is second tier at best on the world scale now. We all want them to be an elite world mint and expect that level of quality and product, yet we consistently get semi-pro stuff at best almost every time.

I agree. Those look a heck of a lot better than the current coins. PS- I saw the "Life" one first, and was shocked (and happy) that the US was making an anti-abortion coin. Then I heard about and saw the rest of the series, lol.

I would not touch the medals OR the coin with a ten foot pole. They look like taking over even more.

For the first year I like the idea a lot more than the designs again. I have a hard time getting over the out of place dress.

Received my set yesterday, and they look great to me.
Waiting for someone with better camera/skill to post pics.
They are what I expected, and really don't care about aftermarket values.
I buy what I like, it's really that simple.

    My two sets arrived today.

While checking them out, my mind was mulling over the thought:

"Is that Olivia Pope" on the obverse??

    Or am I an idiot??

Well , no matter what the agenda is, one thing is apparent: trying to shove these down buyers' throats ain't working too well. Maybe they should take note.

Is that a multiple choice question?

Is it possible both are true? (j/k Lee)

BTW, good catch on the Olivia Pope comment. It DOES look like her.

Everytime I open my mouth or spread my fingers, I take away all doubts about my being an idiot.

I guess I was just hoping that I wasn't alone.

An excellent philosophical AND logistical directive for the Mint, and an absolutely OUTSTANDING idea for the depictions on the individual coins!
