Ok, so this is not an actual US Coin but it's definitely a US Medal.
My mom recently handed me this award that I received at my 6th grade graduation ceremony (around 1979-1981) She kept it in a box of memories and remembered storing it away because she thought that I might lose it or just use it as a discus for throwing.. she's right I probably would of done that! I don't remember getting this award but according to her I was the only kid that received it. - It has it's own neat little stand!
I looked for references on-line and found a few especially some on EBay going for about $30.00 - $50.00. (I want to share an article reference on last pic) - Enjoy!

Nice medal indeed. And you really have no recollection of receiving this? Shoot, even 'forgetful Jones' (me :)) would have remembered that one.......

Beautiful medal. Geez my father was the American Legion Post Commander in my hometown many years ago and I never got anything that cool when I was a kid!

When I got to Junior High School I started to take up Martial Arts. I was more into winning and getting trophies at tournaments than anything else!

Gee, I would cherish that medal for life. I suppose when you are just a 12 year old, it isn't as interesting, which could be why you forgot about it. Good thing your mom saved it for you. As to what went wrong with you as Collecting Nut implies, well, you are from New York. Enough said. Ha, ha!

Were these medals handed out to children of American Legion members?

    :)

Not really.. My parents were definitely not AL members.
All I know is that I was a bright kid, great attendance, and good looking ;)
They only gave one of these out during the graduation ceremony.
