Hello ladies and gentlemen, 2020 was the year I decided to start collecting ancient coins. After many years of modern numismatics, I started to get bored, almost all my goals were fulfilled and I didn't have the passion anymore. All changed when I discovered this numismatic chapter (I had 15 random ancient coins but common and mainly bad shapes), and I try to gain new knowledge almost every day, as the area is large and without proper studying, I don't think you can be a collector. I am sure these coins are not spectacular for most of you, but for me they are the beginning (and not only this) of a wonderful hobby. Most of the pics are from the auctions as photographing coins is a torture for me. 10. Marcus Aurelius AR Denarius, Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180). (175-176) Obv: M ANTONINVS AVG GERM SARM Rev: TR P XXX IMP VIII COS III, Mars Ref: RIC 349 This was the first auction (a lot of 3 denarii + 1 Antoninianus) I've ever seen. The coin is nice, much better in hand (this auction house takes strange pics) and I thought it would be an expensive lot. It wasn't. I like the details and the conservation. 9. Hadrian Denarius. Rome Mint 134-138 AD. Obverse: HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, bare head right. Reverse: ROMAE AETERNAE, Roma seated left on low seat, shield at her side, holding palladium and spear. RIC II: 265, RSC II 1312 From the same lot. Coin with some luster and one of the first emperors I heard of (before starting to collect) 8. Faustina I (100-140) Obverse: DIVA FAVSTINA. Draped bust to right. Reverse: AVGVSTA. Aeternitas standing left, raising hand and holding torch. RIC III 361 This was a from the same auction, but a different lot (8 denarii, worse conservation but decent price and I'm OK with the quality). This was the first coin I have ever seen with an empress and after this, I decided this needs to be a major topic in my collection 7. Vespasianus (69-79) Denarius AD 75 Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head right. PON MAX TR P COS VI Type: Pax, naked to waist, seated left, holding branch extended in right hand, left hand in lap RIC 772 Rome A coin I like because I heard of this emperor before my "collecting" era and I simply liked the obverse. I like Vespasian and I was glad most of his coins are not rare. What I found interesting at ths coin was the counter clockwise writing on the obverse (I have never seen this before) 6. Barbaric imitation of VRBS ROMA (posting pics with it and its "official" sister) This was from a lot of random 34 ancient coins I won, at a bargain price, proven to be full of surprises and it helped me learn how to identify coins. This was the first time I saw a barbarous imitation. I find these extremely interesting. 5. Campania, Svesano, Apollo with man faced bull. This should have been in a lot of "Roman bronzes" but it wasn't. I could tell this is not Roman but all I could do is scratch my head. A gentleman who specializes in these series helped me. It was (an is) a nice addition and broadens my horizon when it comes to ancients. 4. Postumus (260-269 A.D.) Billon Antoninianus Colonia Agrippina (Cologne, Germany) mint, (ca. 260-61 A.D.) Obv: IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG, radiate, draped &cuirassed bust of Postumus right Rev: IOVI VICTORI, Jupiter walking right, hurling a thunderbolt RIC 311 I have always wanted to see a Postumus coin as I read that his resemblance with Santa Claus is astonishing. I agree.
