I never did see any discussion about this auction. I watched it with quite a bit of interest and somehow felt it was pretty significant. So, I just thought I'd post it before it was no longer retrievable: http://www.ebay.com/itm/220838550103?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
A lot of the spouses are sent from the mint defective- If this seller did not go through the hassle of returning (about half) of these to get good ones then the buyer will probably get some pretty scratched up coins. Check out the trouble they can put you through http://www.cointalk.com/t192048/
The description says it's missing the Julia Tyler proof which is one of the most expensive coins in the lot. I do agree that if you are a coin collector of this series, it does pay to examine these coins closely or buy one already slabbed.
Wow that is something. I wonder why the person is letting go of the entire set. That is a high price on ebay. I woudn't want to even guess the fees involved.
I calculate $818.46 give or take a couple of dollars. So after the fees he got an average of $1019.72 per coin.
That's not a bad return if he had been buying them all along. When these coins were first released by the mint in 2007 they were selling for just over $400.
he probably knows he can't afford to complete the set, or thinks gold is high now and he can collect them later. or he lost his job and needs money.
Ebay can only take up to $200 in fees from a listing. Like when I sold some silver on Ebay for $2500, they only took $200 becuase they told me $200 is the MAX they can take.
I was thinking there was something like that, but when I looked at the fee policy page I couldn't find it stated.
