Thanks again everyone. I looked at literally hundreds of Alexander Tets on sixbid, vcoins and ma-shops. I found maybe 4-5 different life-time, babylon ones. And this is the coin I liked the most out of those. I was aware of that I did overpay a bit. But, I like the coin. I like how you can see the lion paws on the obverse and the general symmetry etc.
Live and learn, or so they say. Use this resource for a free and pretty vast database of comparative prices anytime you buy a coin going forward. The link below is for your coin in particular. https://www.cngcoins.com/Search.aspx?PAGE_NUM=&PAGE=1&TABS_TYPE=2&CONTAINER_TYPE_ID=1&IS_ADVANCED=1&ITEM_DESC=babylon alexander tetradrachm lifetime&ITEM_IS_SOLD=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_1=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_3=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_2=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_4=1 I wonder where the 'professional Grading company' is with their explanation of how their grades help the nascent collector get into the hobby in a 'safe' manner? I don't know if this is NGC, but after watching DV on PawnStars again this week, I can see you don't get much value for the slabbing fee, unless you work for the grading company. The grading on the coin was meaningless in judging value. On a brighter note, you did not overpay, it is impossible to overpay. I have had people telling me that for a few days now. ......you should cancel the sale and send it back IMO. It would be worth the shipping and insurance........(unless you need a Price 3599 specifically) and even then (here is an edited version just looking for Price 3599).... https://www.cngcoins.com/Search.asp...1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_4=1&VIEW_TYPE=0
Thanks for all the kind advice folks. I will stubbornly keep the coin anyway. But, well next time I might ask here before I buy something
@Hellbent Please feel free to ask here before you purchase. There are many helpful people here. I really like your Tetradrachm, but like others I believe you paid way too much.
@Hellbent You can return it and buy 3 Alexander's Tets instead. Please don't miss this opportunity. Good Luck. You're new to the dark side.. Start it this way. Cheers
@Hellbent I normally never comment on what people pay for coins because firstly everyone has a different budget and secondly the level of desire to own a particular coin is a personal matter that one cannot put a price on. Having said that, you have paid at least twice what the coin is worth. If you are happy keeping it that's fine but it does not appear to be a particularly rare or 'Unavailable' coin. I'm not an expert but I do like the look of this coin more and its half the cost of your purchase. https://coins.ha.com/itm/greek/anci...-32051.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515# Hope we haven't put you off and look forward to future postings from you.
We are only trying to help. Return it, get another like it for half the price, and buy yourself another 3 to 10 ancient coins with the difference in price.
Grüss Gott , hellbent ? I think Calypso fits better & is nicer Wellcome, stick around overhere and pick up usefull tips & info. Did you do allright ? No, as others already explained , you paid way to much, imho $1000 for the useless plastic slab and $400 for the coin. Yes, the claws of the lionscalp looks sharp & cool, but the rest no, even Alexanders name is not readable. To put things in perspective , I bought these 2 lifetime Tets last year for around $200 each. If you decide to free your coin from its plastic tomb , you are left with a $ 200 coin at best. I would strongly advice you to return the coin for a refund, and look at auctions like CNG USA and Künker Germany , local Swiss sites are perhaps an option also. Alexander III tets are very common, estimate there are 1 million out there, be pricewise, picky and patient. And when in doubt show the coin overhere first, before buying a fake or overpriced coin. lol.. you did fine friend and if your happy with the purchase and price, thats really all that matters. bless and forgive our peeps here for their concern. congrats on a fine coin and welcome to the dark side of CT
Good grief! How did you all know who sold it? I was going to comment on the coin itself. A nice coin dated to just about the time and place where Alaxender died. Nothing wrong with the coin, but I have no idea what he paid or who sold it to him. How about people tell us the details instead of just hinting? I'd like to see and comment.
Nice Tet @Hellbent ! Nice Jacques Avatar! Now I cannot keep his show's theme music out of my head! Watched every episode as it came out in the US. Price: I cannot say anything as I have sprung for some healthy coin for the unusual coins that I have captured over the last few years... The bottom Tet I liberated from a Plastic Coffin, but I paid what I felt as a fair price if it were a raw coin. Well, I didnt see the seller in the original post, then or now. Maybe it was edited? Anyway, as a fellow VCoins dealer I would agree with the average comments. Its roughly $1,000 overpriced (@4to2centBC you may be happy to see me admit this). An example like this which I would grade VF, is worth roughly $250-350. Probably more since someone had to pay to slab it, less raw. But, if he is happy with it who can object? The price is not for me, but the coin type itself is on my list of coins to acquire for my personal collection (and with a little luck I will be posting one very soon).
