I guess we all have our place in life, our reason for being. Often mine is to show that there is a cheap option for those of us who are not ready for the good stuff shown by another member. Below is the one quarter fraction of the stater with similar design. Note the inside of the shield has a serpent rather than a griffin. Of course the main difference is size. These smaller coins do add a minor device under Ajax. Mine is a jellyfish.
Nice! I’ve always liked that jellyfish, and I think your coin shows that the quality of engraving at Lokris could be very high even for the fractions. And as for having our place in life, when I received the coin and ooh-ed and aah-ed over it, some part of me noted with amusement that the second most expensive coin in my collection was, apart from everything else, one with plenty of circulation wear and big ol’ flan flaw on the reverse .
What an impressive jellyfish! Despite the tiny size of that engraving, not only is it clearly a jellyfish-- you can even distinguish the genus and by virtue of location, the species! Wow, that coin and the painting you chose as a supplemental illustration are equally breathtaking! (Gotta hand it to those painters of the pre-Raphaelite era. They knew how to combine "sexy" with "classy" in just the right way.)
PS- (again re. that painting in the OP): I'll bet Dude drops that maiden with a quickness, after he steps down and gets a hot cinder in his sandal! Not very toe-friendly, those hot coals. Watch yer step, Ajax. And maybe let the lady grab some more clothes. Fix yer own pending wardrobe malfunction, while you're at it. Please.
Me too. If I were a bazillionaire, I'd collect not only coins of every description, but would have a big roomful of Pre-Raphaelite paintings in my chateau. (The Old Masters and Statuary rooms would be further down the colonnade, just on the left before you get to the Great Hall and the library - the main library, that is - not the incunabula - those are off to the right.) Oh, here, would you like a canapé? Thank you, Nigel. That will be all. Yep, that's bacon-infused guacamole there. Tiger prawns on the others. I can't abide caviar, you see, so I have Jean-Pierre prepare a big batch of fresh guac every morning. Mind you don't get any on the Gobelin tapestry, there.
