JPscorner sells genuine airtites for $.47-$.49 each depending on size. Some places just sell them for more. Locally they are $1.50 each.
NGC offers a slab that they advertise as airtight - they completely seal the two slab halves. Problem is, the plastic they and everbody else uses is not 100% impervious to air. So it isn't really airtight. But it's as close a you can get in a coin holder. The real problem is the materials used to make coin holders plastic - air can and will pass right through it. Metal and glass can be made airtight, but not plastic. And the problems with making coin holders out of glass or metal are self evident. So, they use what they have.
I wonder how hard it would be to make a slab out of glass, with intake and purge valves that allowed you to fill it with an inert gas ? It would be expensive, but would be sweet for high end coins.
maybe in the future a new tpg will solve this problem and start some lively competition for the the now top guns. i guess it doesn't much matter, when you think about the coin being contaminated before it's holdered. if a finger print is on a coin before it's slabbed it will still 'tone' or corrode in time, oh well. grizz

Thanks for the input on AirTites. I will purchase the AirTites from JP's Corner: http://www.jpscorner.com/ It appears that most of the members on this board are satisfied with them.
I've been using Airtites with black rings for several years and have never noticed any toning of my coins.
One thing you have to watch is the spelling. The name of the real company is trademarked but the knock-offs will use different spellings. The real things are Air-Tites. If they say AirTite , Airtite, Airtight, airtite, air-tite or any other variation then you MIGHT be getting a knock-off, or the person writing it may just be being sloppy.
Thanks for the heads up. are the black made of different material then the white? If not the coins would not know the difference between White and Black
I believe both the black and white rings are both made of polyethylene. However, if I recall my chemistry classes, polyethylene is white/semi-opaque, so I imagine that some sort of die is used to make the black color. Please also note that I haven't experienced the toning myself, and others have reported using the black inserts without any ill effects. Have fun, and may all your Air-Tite coins remain untoned...Mike
JP Corner sells AirTite, without the hyphen and the trailing 's'. The sales rep at http://www.jpscorner.com/ told me that the "AirTite" capsules they sell are made in US. Should I be concerned about this or am I making this too technical?
