    Another theory I have going is maybe the coins were dipped and not properly rinsed, and those chemicals caused a breakdown of the black insert where it came in contact with the coins.

    Yeah I could see what John said happening under abnormal conditions (ie ripoff air-tites or external factors like chemicals). But it probably does not happen otherwise.
