Aemilian was a powerful general who defeated invading Goths and got himself proclaimed emperor by his troops. He marched on Rome and defeated Trebonianus Gallus, but when Valerian came at him with a much larger army, Aemilian's soldiers mutinied and assassinated him. He reigned all of three months in AD 253. His short reign makes him one of the challenging slots in an emperor set, which is probably exacerbated by the fact that a damnatio memoriae was issued against him. Likely many of his already scarce issues were destroyed. Even rarer are the coins of his wife, Cornelia Supera, which will run you a few grand for a nice example. What do you all have for Aemilian or Cornelia Supera? Enquiring minds need to know.
My only one is this Antioch, Pisidia provincial. They are rather common. IMP C M AEM AEMILLIANO AVG. ANTIOCHIO CLA / S R.
Nice one! Being an Aemilian certainly makes it one of the cooler Viminacium coins. A couple of Aemilians; one imperial and one provincial. AEMILIAN AR Denarius 3.98g, 21.5mm Rome mint, AD 253 RIC IV Aemilian 8 O: IMP AEMILIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right. R: PACI AVG, Pax standing left, holding a branch and a transverse sceptre, legs crossed, leaning upon a column. AEMILIAN AE21 4.44g, 21.7mm MYSIA, Parium, AD 253 A. Boutkowski-Glinka, "Monnaies grecques inédites", NumCirc I.3 (February 1893), p. 79, 7. O: IMP M AEM AEMILIANVS I, laureate draped bust right. R: Triumphal arch consisting of large central bay with attic flanked by two secondary bays; central bay surmounted by triumphal quadriga of elephants; each secondary bay surmounted by figure set on low basis; CGIHP (Colonia Gemella lulia Hadriana Pariana) in exergue. Notes: Rare and unrecorded in major references.
Ya, John's OP coin would go great with this one... Philip I, AD 244-248 AE, 15.1g, 28mm; 6h; Viminacium, AD 248 Obv.: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG; laureate, draped, & cuirassed bust right Rev.: P M S COL VIM; Moesia standing, looking left between bull and lion In Ex.: AN VIIII ...and Zumbly's provincial is just wonderful. Doug's is VERY nice...sigh.
Nice examples folks, especially the provincials. My only Aemilian is imperial Aemilian, Antoninianus Rome mint, AD 253 IMP CAES AEMILIANVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind SPES PVBLICA, Spes standing left, holding flower and lifting skirt 3.70 gr Ref : RCV # 9844, RIC # 20, Cohen # 48 Q
Jwt and JA => sweet Bull & Lion posts ...... man, maybe I'd better score myself one of those babies, eh?
oh man, i don't have one of this guy. i do have this related coin from viminacium that matches jwt's i've never posted... Philip I, the Arab, 244 -249 A.D., Viminacium, Moesia Superior O: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, from behind; R: P M S COL VIM, Moesia standing facing, head left, extending hands over bull on left standing right and lion on right standing left, AN VIIII (year 9 of the Viminacium colonial era..248 AD) in exergue . Varbanov I 138. 28 mm, 17.9 g it's cool that these coins are dated from the founding of the colony in 239, and cool that the animals are legion "mascots".
Since we're talking Viminacium bull and lions, here's Hostilian! Apologies - this one has a hard-to-photograph patina.
Believe it or not, I like your"fake" of Cornelia Supera. If it's a Slavy, it's collecatable on it's own and has value even as a copy.
