She was the wife of Severus Alexander, who reigned just shy of four years, and I believe her coins were only minted for two, so they're scarce. If you want to read a story from the annals of Roman weirdness, look into Severus Alexander and his suspiciously oedipal relationship with his mother Julia Mamaea, who despised Orbiana. Creepy stuff. If they were alive today, they'd all be on Maury Povich.
I don't have Orbiana, but she would complete my trio. I have a bronze of Julia Mamaea from Bostra, attached below. I just bought a very nice denarius of Severus Alexander, but I really can't post the seller's pic since it's so pedestrian. Hmmm. Maybe it's time to go shopping for Orbiana...
There's one on vcoins in terrible shape for $69. After that it jumps to $250 or so for one not in that great of shape either.
What do you guys think of this one? http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/rom...la_ar_denarius__concordia/245341/Default.aspx
I saw them. I'd probably bite the bullet for a higher grade piece. I like some of the denarii and sestertii. But my budget is used up at the moment.
This has to be the least feminine lady I've ever seen. Maybe that's how I will justify never forking over the money for one of her coins. http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/her...r_of_titus_denarius_venus/506010/Default.aspx
I agree. I sure as heck would pick out a more common empress in much nicer shape for less than 100 pounds personally. Why chase a scarcer chick when there are just as pretty or prettier ladies more available? Sorry, it sounded a little like I was giving dating advice there......
I think you can get a Julia Domna, Julia Maesa, or a Julia Mamaea in pretty good condition for under $100 without searching too hard.
I agree there are plenty of nice denarii out there in the $30 - $40 range...I just happen to have $100 to spend on one coin now and would like to plug an expensive hole in the collection with it. Just so long as you don't tell me to date Julia Titi I think your dating advice will be fine. Clearly pretty and cheap is better than scarce, expensive, and rough around the edges in the dating world anyway eh?
If I recall those generally had very nice denarii for $40-$50. If I can get one for that cheap, I'd rather save the $100 (or a little more) for something that I can't get later on for half the price (and slightly worse condition) of a $100 one. It's hard though cuz I don't want to spend $100 on a majorly flawed coin for the sake of scarcity, either.
I have a lot of browsing and learning to do. Am I the only one turned off by the legends being messed up, even a little bit (say like one or two letters eroded off)?
Crispina denarii can be had on ebay in the $60s - $80s. I suggest a Tranquillina in bronze for $100. And that Julia Titi I would take in a flash, but she isnt high on my list.
I'll check out those two you listed. That Julia Titi is also $595. I don't have quite enough for that When you say Tranquillina bronze do you mean the ones with two busts, or by herself? The ones of her alone seem to be pricier and I'm assuming more scarce.
All of these sweet babies are $100 or less (some closer to $50) ... Honestly, ya can't swing a dead-cat without finding at least one nice-enough chick-coin out there for around $100 ... keep lookin' All of these stevex6 examples were delivered for < $100 "Canadian" Faustine II AE Sestertius Lucilla AE Sestertius Otacilia Severa AR Antoninianus Herennia Etruscilla AR Antoninianus Salonina AR Antoninianus
