Congrats on your purchase, I'm glad you like it. Please don't take offense at this, but if you had posted this as a Guess the Grade, I would have said no higher than 64. Are those scratches and marks all over his face as prominent in hand, or did the lighting emphasize them? Or is that just what passes for a 66 these days? Again, I'm not trying to sound mean.
I made the mistake of re-organizing my work area and now can't find my loupes. I need one to see if those scratches are on the slab or coin. If on the coin, it's DEFINITELY not a -66.
A couple of the wispy marks may be on the plastic. The majority of what I'm seeing is clearly on the coin, however.
The big black spot on the reverse caught my eye before the scratches. If you paid full 66 money I’m glad you did it for a BTW and not a Pan Pac or Hawaian.
I found my loupe and, yes, the marks are on the coin. And I know about the carbon spot. I looked at the edges of the slab to see if I could determine whether it had been tampered with. I couldn't make a decision. It's definitely not a pretty coin -- except for the reverse. Oops, forget the carbon spot.
I can see it as being such (reverse is 'stellar')........lovely. Competition from you old fellow? I'm 95% complete.
Kanga, I really don't mean to rag on your coin, but if you can return it, I think you should. I wasn't going to mention the carbon spot on the reverse, but the eye appeal of that spot really brings it down as well. If you paid any more than 64 money for this, you got ripped off. This isn't a rare coin, so wait for an accurately graded quality piece.
Black mark don't bother me none.........adds 'character' and charisma, but my opinions might be in the minority.......
In my opinion (not that it really matters), the lower value commems to me are just sort of 'gotta have them for the set' coins, and because there is so little in price difference between grades, any coin would suffice, so I would just keep it. It's not like it's a Hawaiian or Spanish Trail, where the value of the set could be destroyed. A question - you say this is coin #92 out of 164. I thought there were 144 coins needed for the complete date/MM set? Why am I off by 20? Or is my recollection of the number needed just off?
Yes, there are 144 coins in the silver set. There an additional 13 in the gold set. Not sure where the 164 comes from, but I suspect it is a typo.
Yes, my count includes the gold issues. No, I will not be able to get them all, but it keeps me aware that they are there. It'll recheck my Excel inventory file about the count. I think I know what the error is.
Okay, the problem was as I expected. I had some duplicates and I was adding them to my count. They are now removed so the count is down to 156. Oops, now I'm one low. Now I'll have to go through the file one by one and find what's missing.
Some people include the 2 Norse (thick/thin) I don't, however. My set is 39% complete and the 51-S BTW is one I need.
I'm doing the 50 set, which in my case, is actually 52. I include the Norse and the Washington quarter. I'm 87% complete (45 out of 52). (I post this any chance I can)
