Well, all of my smooth edge coins are gone except for the few that i have kept. Over 100k searched, Found less than 50 of the smooth edge and a lot of the double edge. This gig is pretty much over, havent found any in about 2 weeks. My guess is the double edges are going to end up in the same price range as the Washington smoothies, the Adams smoothies will be in the $1000 range in the next few weeks. Just a guess based on what I have seen, found and heard here locally. Good luck gang.
re: Adams smoothies $1000 Jim, I totally agree that these will be $1000+ in a few weeks to a few months. I've also searched a ton of rolls (no where near 4000 rolls like you did) and I found many double struck, but just a few smoothies and I didn't find my first smoothie until about 10 days ago. I went to the Warren show here in Michigan yesterday and talked to a few people who were selling these and the consensus was that these smoothies are going up in value and will be extremely rare. I know some are predicting that there may only be hundreds of these, but I know for sure it won't be that low based on the info I heard at the show. I guess 1 to 2 per roll is what anyone who has found these was finding and even if they got lets say 4 rolls from the same bank there might be 1 or 2 in one roll, but none in the rest which is the opposite of what happened with the double struck where if one roll had a few you could pretty much bet the rest of the rolls would also. Based on my experience I would predict that each hot box (hot box meaning a box that contained smoothies) of $1000 would have about 25 to 30 smoothies in it and from what I understand these were only being found at locations of two major banks in the detroit metropolitan area and not every branch would have them from which I can testify to from my own experience. I figure if we are conservative and assume that 100 banks overall received hot boxes of these smoothies then you could figure about 2500 to 3000 smoothies are out there, but I think that even this might be a high estimate. Heck if the 1995 W Silver Eagles are selling for $5000 and there are 30,000 out there and the Washington SMoothies are selling for $100 in 65's and supposedly there are close to 100k out there then if the numbers I'm predicting hold true then yes we will see prices in thousands before we know it. Personally, I'm hanging on to mine, but my double struck I don't care about since I know those will be in the 10's of thousands. Also I bet the slabbed ones will be commanding $600 or more once they appear on ebay just because most people will not want to fork out big dollars in fear of being scammed. In addition, if this news hits the USA Today like the Washington Smoothies did then these will really skyrocket.
Hello Chris, I think I met you at the show a few weekends ago. Talking to Dan. I too was at the show in Warren Sunday. Seen a few, I know most of the dealers there, they too feel that its going to go up ones the ebay run is over.
Jim, yes I did meet you a few weeks ago and I should be at the Redford show this weekend trying to get some more info on these smoothies- wow what a small world. Last night on ebay I saw a smoothie go for $660 and the buy it nows were cleared out in the past 12 hours and I think at this point no one is going to set a buy it now anymore in the $300 range. The listings seem to be going down on ebay and although being a novice collector it is hard for me to imagine any modern coin selling for $1000 or more, but when I see the 1995 W SIlver Eagle going for $5000 and with a mintage of 30,000 then it becomes logical to me. Furthermore, if you have 100k Washington smoothie collectors out there and if only 3000 or 4000 of these Adams smoothies show up then you could see how prices could sky rocket when you have 100,000 collectors wanting the adam's smoothies to complement their washington smoothie and only 3 or 4 thousand are out there. Like I said mine aren't for sale until prices are in the thousands and although there is a slight possibility that more could surface I would say that it is unlikely since we are already 6 weeks into the release date of these Adam's dollars. Also on our side will be the liklihood that the mint will probably drastically increase their inspection process to prevent a third embarrassment which is being well publicized each time in the news, so I can almost guarantee this is not the publicity they want. In other words, in my opinion, we aren't going to see anymore errors on the Jefferson Dollars or for that matter any future dollars. Furthermore, if you look at the state quarer program the unc rolls that are doing the best are the very first ones and I expect the same thing to apply with the president dollars- the very first ones will do the best in the long run as more collectors come aboard and need to go back and complete their collections. Finally, Washington, Adams, and Jefferson and legends just like Ruth, Cobb, and Gehrig were. What has happened to the cards of those three? They have skyrocketed over the years. I see the same thing happening with the first three presidents- their legendary status like Cobb and Ruth will help fuel the fire for these coins in the short and long term. To put simpily most people would rather have a Washington, Adams, or Jefferson coin instead of a Cleveland, Polk, or Madison coin and when you add an ultra rare mint error to the mix then I say it translates into prices in the thousands. Maybe I will see you this weekend.
