Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the different texture on the edges is just a product od the way the planchets are cut from the strips and the pressure of the strike for the edge letters. They are not shiney or mat on porpose, just the luck of the draw.

I don't know if anyone has read the article in Coin World concerning the "Edge Inscriptions" on the Presidential Dollars or not! If you have not, then you should be aware that very soon the Mints will more than likely be moving the Mottos, Date and Mintmark from the Edge to somewhere on the Obverse and possibly on the Reverse. Since the "Edge Inscription" Errors will cease to exist, this should cause a significant increase in the values of the recently minted coins that have the errors! This is just my opinion which is many times flawed, so don't reliy on my opinion alone!

Just thought you should be aware of this tidbit for future purchases and/or for hoarding of the Presidential Dollars with "Edge Inscription" Errors!

Thanks for that post regarding coin world

If they do indeed do away with the edge inscription I would also expect prices of the smoothies and double struck to shoot up in value. Also someone just posted that pcgs has only graded 151 of the ADams smoothies so far. That is a very low number, but I think we need another 3 or 4 weeks to get a good indication of how many are out there.

I still say the mint is doing it on purpose

Heres a question.. If the 4-coin proof sets are available now, then the dies have been put in the machines.. how possible is it that some/most of the 3rd and 4th MS coins have already been struck and sent to CWI? Wouldn't the mint's existing flawwed process have been used on most/all of THOSE coins too? I'm gonna give a 15% chance that at least the next in the series(Jefferson) has as many double edge errors.

ANother thought.. If indeed the mint, upon discovering the washington SMOOTHIES, searched and removed as many ADAMS SMOOTHIES already struck, we should expect as many DOUBLE EDGE in the JEFFERSON release as SMOOTHIES in the Adams release.

    Make sense?

I'm not really sure what you are asking here but it sounds like you are relating the Proof coins to the business strikes - you shouldn't. The edge design on the Proof President dollars are made with an entirely different process than the edge design on the business strikes.

As for the possibility of edge lettering errors on future business strikes - I serious doubt anything will change until the mint changes its process. The problem as I see it, or what I think is causing the errors, is the fact that they are trying to run these coins through the edge die at the rate of 1,000 coins per minute. And until they slow down - the errors are likely to continue.

Not so much a question as one with an implied answer. I'm saying that it's obvious that they do the strikes WAAY before the release date.. and there is probably Jefferson doubles already minted.

That's pretty fast.. if you do some math:

If they had 208 machines, they could mint all 300,000,000 in a day!!

Since they have essentially 90 days (assuming they start after the previous series is finished) they only need 3 edge lettering machines running 24/7.

It seems they could afford a dozen of these machines. Wonder why they go so fast if they don't really have to?

Well, when you have two Mints (Philly and Denver) minting somewhere between 3 billion and 9 billion Lincoln Cents, Jefferson Nickels, Roosevelt Dimes, State Quarters and who knows how many State Quarters, Half Dollars, Sacagawea Dollars and (4) Presidential Dollars in a year, they have to go fast! Also, the Philly Mint is still plucking out who knows how many Silver Eagles, Gold Eagles, Platinum Eagles and who knows what else they have on their plate. WWWWWWHHHHEEEEEEWWWW! I doubt that they have time to chew bubble gum.

Note: I intentionally did not include the San Francisco Mint since they mainly mint Proof and Commemorative coins.

    Somthing to think about!

The two banks I deal with both have sent there Adams dollars back. They told me the coins were not moving. There could be many with smooth edges being sent back or still sitting at the fed reserve;)

I'm surprised that PCGS isn't labeling the Adams overlap error as either position A or Position B. Seems it should be the same as the regular strike releases.
