Thanks guys, appreciate the comments. One thing that confuses me is that it's listed as a Roman Imperial coin, says COL NEM, which I assume means Colonia Nemausus. I thought it was a Roman Provincial coin. Can anyone clear this up for me? I talked to the dealer and apparently this coin is a Dupondius. The page for it says it's a Orichalcum As. There is no weight or size for it.
While these were initially issued only for Nemausus, the vast numbers and the broad find spots for this series indicates that it became the de facto coinage of Western Europe in the early 1st century AD. See RPC I for more details.
Cities honored with full status as Colonies were honored by the privilege of issuing coins with Latin Legends. Early coin catalogs often listed these Latin legend Provincials in their Imperial books. The crocs were listed in Cohen even. They are Provincial but a bit higher status than the Greek language ones. The coins are yellow brass too much to be an as and a bit too little to be a dupondius. I have no idea what they were intended to be but I call them dupondii.
dougsmit => ummm, eventhough you called my coin "average" => I absolutely love my good ol' croco-dawg!! ... for the record, I bought this bad boy "before" you wrote your link-thingy (although, I guess you did post a thread showing your "half-coin" ... so maybe you're right ... maybe you did get me interested in these coins?) ... either way ... => these croc-coins rock!!
I do like them. Having a crocodile is enough to make a coin a little special but chaining him to a tree adds something as do the back to back portraits. What really makes the coin special to me is that they were made for the retirement community populated by veterans of the crocodile war. This would be like the US government giving every Iraq War vet 40 acres in Wyoming and issuing a coin for them to use showing the toppling of that big statue of Saddam Hussein. Very few ancient coins come with as good a backstory. Your coin is nice but I am prejudiced against a coin missing the croc snout. I can live with a tail-free croc but I do like the mouth to be on flan. I do not have a coin with a good DIVI F like yours so I guess I'll be buying another.
Ssshhh, please don't tell her that she doesn't have snout => she thinks that she's beautiful!! ... but yah, I must admit that I wish my coin had a snout, but then the price would have risen from $240 to $1500, right? (I think overall, my coin is good enough => box ticked => move-on to the next coin) ... => keep-up the great work my friend!! (I feel honoured even talkin' coins with ya!!) :thumb:
well, after browsing the type at vcoins, i think your's has the highest coolness/price ratio.....nice coin GG!
