Although this coin looks like any other "Sol" reverse of Sev. A., this one is actually fairly rare, as it was minted during the last 3 or so months of his reign before big Max I axed him and his mom. I have been on the hunt for one for 2 years now. Some surfaced on CNG but they go for past my budget, this one surfaced at what I was willing to pay and now a white whale was captured. One can tell its the last issue due to the "XIIII" on the reverse! Severus Alexander (222 - 235 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: PM TR P XIIII COS III PP, Sol walking left holding whip and raising hand. Rome Mint, January–February/March, 235 A.D. 2.8g 19mm RIC125 Rare
Not only rare, but very pleasing to look at as well. Certainly it's a great feeling to acquire a type one has had a difficult search for and it's a neat bonus if it's a beauty such as that one. Congrats!
^Thanks I noticed sestertius are a bit common with this reverse legend. I know Randy has one. Interesting the bronzes had more issues then the silver.
Great score, Mat ... I love your new coin, but I am a bit confused? => Ummm, what is this "patience" thingy that you're all speaking of? congrats one spearing your white whale (cheers)
Awesome score, coin-buddy! You still cannot tempt me to the Empire...I am still a Rebel for the Res Publica!
