oily Seems oily and as someone pointed out the toning is irratic~ I like the luster behind all the "toning" actually the luster and condition of the P dollar to me would be alot better without the "toning" on it.
Take another look Frank, the size and pattern is way too eratic and too big for a fingerprint. In many places the dark color is just in the crevices of the design and it follows the design's pattern. A fingerprint wouldn't. In other places the color is on the fields and smoother areas, but even these are not consistent with a fingerprint. And since the coloring is the same on both obv and rev, albeit much more consistent on the rev and covering a larger area, this also indicates the toning was due to something else.
My pug could put poo-poo smear marks on a coin and make it look like that. It really looks like someone wiped their booty with it. dd:
That is rather what I hope everyone else thinks so that maybe I can get the coin with no premium. Hope $425 will be enough. I don't know why I like it, but I do. It has a character that is all it's own. Plus it seems to have a nice strike and excellent luster. It is also in the final session with no floor bidding which bodes well for me.
you like foreign coins too? there is this second million that i have been wanting to make ....
I hate to admit this but before I knew better this would have been a prime example of a coin that I would have dipped to get rid of the surface discoloration ( toning ). Just wanted to point that out for all those who may be thinking the same thing. It's too bad you can't turn back time.
The obverse looks like brush strokes. Also, the color and heavy thickness with no subtle fading of tone looks like exposure to something nasty - a resin or something. Personally, not eye appealing.
Yeah, that was sort of my same thought. I have always wanted to put together a blast white MS65 Peace Dollar set...but a fun side project would be a set of lower MS grades with a variety of toning. Kind of a "whole picture" of Peace Dollar set. I can tell you right now...I like that coin and if I wasn't a student, I'd definitely make a run at it. Unfortunately, that's not feasible right now...so good luck my friend.
Um, eww... that is seriously ugly toning. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole at any price. I know some people have an aversion to ever dipping coins but this is the kind of coin dip was made for... probably the only thing that can save an otherwise good coin here.
Nice coin with nice luster. Not a huge fan of the tone, however I don;t think it is butt ugly like many of the others do. I've seen some ugly toned peace dollars before. I'd like to know what caused the tone. I don't think it is poo poo smears. Looks like clothe or fabric but not an expert. At first it looks like the coin was placed onto plastic with something on it to cause the tone, however I'm not suggesting AT here.
