This is a coin that they used to bag as environmental damage. In the last few years they started letting them through in no problem holders. Technical grade looks like mid to high AU.. but i'll bet it's in a low MS holder.... My guess is MS61.
There's a shipping delay at PCGS so I have no clue how long it'll be before I get it in-hand. But it graded AU53. I was hoping for an AU50 despite the weak strike of the stars and Ms. Liberty's crown, and I did one step better! Good guesses! Most of you had it or were within a couple points. Thanks for looking!
Shoot C-B.....ya posted the answer too soon. I was going with XF-45. Seems like a lot of rim wear/damage to me.......
True, but it depends on how you define "problem". I think that coin has been dipped and since re-toned. But that's par for the course with a lot of 19th-century issues, and this one re-toned beautifully in my opinion. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
Here's a good thread on verdigris. Most common in copper coinage, but any coin can suffer from it: http://www.cointalk.com/t211198/
To my admittedly inexperienced eyes, the green on the Trade Dollar looks like toning. I'm not being argumentative though - I just don't know. I'm not completely inexperienced with verdigris though. I'm currently performing some micro-surgery on this coin in order to conserve it... But that's a rather obvious example. I'm curious though: if PCGS determined that the Trade Dollar had some verdigris, would they do anything to conserve it before it got slabbed?
