Which do you like better, assuming either could be bought for the same price?

One does sacrifice "touchability" when coins are in plastic slabs. But for proofs and high end Mint State coins, that's for the best. It is a bit of a shame with the ancients, though. And you can safely touch gold coins like this when they're raw. Gold is stable and won't usually get fingerprinted and such.

Slabbing has a number of advantages and a few disadvantages, too. It works for me, presently, though I do sometimes think about liberating my ancients and going the traditional way with them. For now, I'm still slabbing them for the sake of uniformity in my box, if nothing else.

The beading you see on this coin is raised dots, not indentations.

I'm coming late to the party but I want to commend you on your new addition. Absolutely fabulous look with a special family and spiritual connection!

LordM, You know I'm a big fan of your sigline montage but that Carolus d'or just doesn't have enough detail to justify its spot there.

    Thanks.

Hmm. I'll have to see what I can do about tweaking the sigline banner.

I would definately pick #1! I have this coin from from same mint!
The Carolus d'or, I would try to upgrade. I have AV Real d'or from Brabant graded EF by Morton & Eden, probably would slab MS-62. These are super tough to get in perfect quality, the folks working at the mints in the Spanish Netherlands must have been paid "mininum wages" since their work show that:( The coinage from the so called "Low Countries" were far better made before Spain took over, and improved after Spain lost them to Habsburgs in 1713. Here is mine... as you can see a crappy strike. Maybe the "mintmaster" lost his job/head?

I'd love to upgrade my Carolus d'or, but probably couldn't afford to do that. I know the example I have is well worn, but I do like the contrasting toning on it.

The TrueView of the toman is up, now:
