A Small Collection of Early-Date Seated Coinage: Half Dimes to Quarters

Collecting early-date (1837-1840's) seated coinage has been a small niche hobby of mine over the years. I pick them up as I find them, most are not-encapsulated, and none have been too expensive.

I recently added an 1838-O half dime, and and 1843-O dime - both scarce issues. Again, not high grades or anything, just historical and interesting early U.S seated coinage which I appreciate.

Here they are - Seated Half Dimes:

    Nice collection!

I need that 1838-O half dime for my New Orleans mint type set. If you don't mind saying, how much was it and where did you get it (generically, e.g. coin shop, coin show, ebay, etc.)?

I just got it last week from Ebay.

Besides the 1843-O dime, the 1838-O H10C was probably the most difficult to find in 'still-decent' condition without paying an arm and a leg. I looked for one for a long time, but they were always either too beat-up, or much too expensive. Very happy to have found this one, even if it still cost more than PCGS guide for the grade.

Yep. I've been after one for quite some time as well to complete my NS set... even damaged they go through the roof, but it's an R-7.

    Glad you found yours!

John, as you mention, CoinFacts does call the 1838-O H10C an R-7 with an estimated population of 200 coins. With 200 known, though, this would be more like an R-4, correct? At least it would be in the Sheldon scale which is the only one I am familiar with.

I'm sure you know more about it than I do- I was just going off coinfacts. They seem scarcer than an R-4 to me though, at least the problem free ones.

I have been on an O mint mark buying spree for some time now when it comes es to half dimes. You just don't see a heck of a lot of them ,that said if they are somewhat decent in shape I buy them needed or not.
Sometimes for the variety others as bargaining chips.

Possibly they mean R-7 in MS. A lot of books and sites tend to do that take a coin that is actually available in circulated condition but rare in MS and just give the MS rarity.
