I was wondering if you were going to chime in. Thank you for coming out of semi-retirement to repeat Barry Murphy's opinion.

I'm on the search for an upgrade of my Titus denarius, but I guess I have lots of competition. :(

The only tooling I see, that is creation of new details, is in Titus' hair on the obverse.

I can't immediately find a VF, untooled As from the same obv. die which would show how much of that hair is original, and how much added by the tooler.

Titus' hair on the obverse does appear to be very highly detailed.

However, I'm curious if it's possible to authoritatively determine (i.e., beyond any doubt), simply from viewing a moderate-definition picture without examining the coin in hand, that the coin exhibits tooling in that area?

Yes, it is possible, if the photos are reasonable. Tooling adds or changes details.

Yes, I understand what tooling is. My curiosity is whether the photograph posted by the OP is sufficiently high resolution to determine beyond doubt that the coin has been tooled? Or possibly you have access to a higher resolution photo of the coin?

The photo is clear enough in my opinion to strongly suggest tooling of Titus' hair, especially to the right of and below his laurel wreath.

Thanks -- that was what I was wondering about.

I have contacted the seller and the coin is being returned for a refund.

I wish to keep my collection a toolie free zone.
