Excellent detail, cool patina, smooth, clean surfaces. The coin is darker and more subtle in hand – I imaged it in bright sunlight, but it gives you a good idea of the features and color. SOLD ____________________________________ LOT 5. Here’s a rather rare RR bronze, struck by moneyer L. Rubrius Dossenus in 87 BC. The obverse presents an unusual variation of the Janus theme – the two faces of the god are partitioned by a cylindrical altar around which a serpent is entwined. You don’t see this coin come up for sale very often. Here is one at vcoins with rough surfaces. This example is actually pretty good for the type, which is weakly struck overall – compare to others at CNG here. This specimen would easily hammer in the $150-$200 range. Shipped: $120 ROMAN REPUBLIC. L. Rubrius Dossenus, moneyer. Æ As, 29mm, 11.3 g, 12h; Rome mint, 87 BC. Obv.: Laureate head of bearded Janus; in center, a cylindrical altar round which a serpent is entwined. Rev.: Prow of galley right; L. RVBRI/DOSSEN above, I (mark of value) to right.
