A Question for the Old Timers

A few responses have prompted me to write this reply. My father was born in 1910 and his father died when he was three. He was only 19 when the depression hit. He had three brothers and a sister. His mother lost because of death, all three of her husbands.

Being the oldest my dad was unable to finish his last year of school. He took a job setting pins up in a bowling alley. This was before automation. He was the only one that worked to support his mother and four siblings. When the depression really got bad he lost his job to a man that was married. Just one of the things that happened in that era.

No matter how bad things were his mother always did what he considered to be the right thing. It’s a depression, a total lack of work, 6 mouths to feed, and they were very poor. They live in a row home in Baltimore. Despite all their hardships they had if someone knocked on the door and asked for a food handout his mother would always give them a bowl of soup and a piece of bread.

Then after they left she would go out and scrub the mark on the curb off. The person would always mark the curb in front of a house they gave them a hand out. She couldn’t afford to do it for everybody but she did it for those that she thought were less off than her.

My point is no matter how bad things are when it comes to our parents and grandparents who lived through this time they always managed. How they saved money, bought food and clothes, took care of the hungry it’s something we can’t understand. They always did what to us today, seems impossible.

I have never seen an encased gold coin, and I have been active for over 60 years. But, then again, I have never been an active collector or dealer encased coins.

I remember seeing some small gold bezeled coins as the handle of a small set of spoons once.

if you search on ebay for "us gold coin rings" you get a slew of them.

 

Yes but that is just a gold coin ring (there are LOTS of them) it's not an encased gold coin.
