a q about ASE's as bullion

    since they are minted by the us govnm't and can not be melted down why would they have any value as a usable source of silver. im not sure if my thinking is correct but wouldn't it only have value as a collectable?

    The restriction is currently only against melting cents and nickels. You can melt them if you wish.

    The big keys are in red below from the US code. The part specific about the illegality of melting cents and nickels is in a different legislation.

    The law you're thinking of forbids "fraudulently" altering coins. The Mint has confirmed that the penny-stretching machines at tourist traps are legal, though they refer to them as "despicable".

    No, coins are your possessions and you can do with them as you like. The current law regarding cents and nickels would probably be overturned if anyone challenged it. ANy idiot can make a law, (just look at our Congress), but that doesn't mean its Constitutional.

    thanks guys, i thought i was possibly holding 500 collectable coins.
