Recently came across this large, 33mm, provincial which is obviously Severus Alexander. I'm pretty sure it is from Philomelium Phrygia but just can't find it in the typical sites and really am not sure what the reverse is showing. Any ideas?
Could it be Aphrodite with a shield and amphora, like this coin I found in ISEGRIM? 23. PHRYGIA, Philomelium. 222-235 AD. AE. Obverse: AY K M AY SEY ALEXANDROS; PORTRAIT MAN R / SEV. ALEXANDER (WREATH LAUREL / CLOTHES). Reverse: P'ILOMHLEWN EPI AYR STRYMONOS STRA; WOMAN STANDING HR(1) / APHRODITE(1) / AMPHORA(2) (SHIELD(1-2)). 1. 32mm DIEUDONNE RN 1903 page 231 #113 2. 33mm SCHLOSSER NZ 1891 page 16 #23, COLL WIEN
That's it. Thanks again Ed. I tried ISEGRIM but didn't see it. Probably put in an incorrect search word. I really like provincials but they are sometimes very frustrating to identify.
I created a front-end for ISEGRIM at http://isegrim.mybluemix.net . For this coin, because I wasn't certain, I searched just for Philomelium and then used control-F to search within the page. ISEGRIM can be picky. For example, Severus Alexander is "SEV. ALEXANDER". Searching for him doesn't help unless you know that!
Probably why I didn't find the coin using this online resource, although I did find a couple of others on it. Unfortunately it's not very intuitive so it's a little difficult to navigate.
