    I would go with silver eagles for the situation you describe. Even if they aren't universally recognized now, they would quickly become known if things got bad. And the fact that they were struck by the government would probably give them a recognition value over bars of unknown origin. Any 90% silver coins would probably be almost as good but seem to sell for a greater premium over bullion value at the present time.

    As far as what people might take in such a scenario...

    I would avoid 90% silver coins that currently circulate - roosys, quarters and halves. Not everyone may realize that pre-1965 ones are the silver ones.

    I think Peace and Morgan dollars and Franklin halves would be the best if you want to go with coins - not sure that is the best way to go, but if you do....

    For little purchases, small-time merchants could be very nervous about silver rounds and bars. Who knows if they're real or where they come from. I'm supposing people are going to be very suspicious!!

    Ha. If it gets real serious, WATER will probably be the most precious commodity - especially in cities!!!!
