I'm always on the hunt for cool "stans" and when this Great Silk Road coin from Kyrgyzstan popped up, I bid strong to win (luckily it cost me less than what raw examples are priced for on eBay now, but it was still a bit more than what I could have paid last year for a raw example).

The obverse of the coin shows silhouettes of sites and monuments of both cultural and historic value (as defined by UNESCO). There is also a map with the route of the Silk Road (the path is highlighted in gold). The "Great Silk Road" is written in Russian on the top; the colorful logo below is that of the Eurasian Economic Community (can be seen on quite a few coins, from various nations, made in the timeframe that this organization existed). The denomination, weight, and purity are on the bottom. On the reverse, we see the Emblem of Kyrgyzstan, a caravan on its way through the mountains, and the issued year (2011).

In the 2013 coin of the year competition (which awards prizes to coins issued in 2011-it is always two years behind), this coin won the award for Most Historically Significant.

https://coinweek.com/world-coins/modern-world-coin/krause-publications-announces-2013-coin-of-the-year-winners/
