    Just for information, @chut who posted the comment you refer to doesn't really come from nowhere. he actually is a Gordian III expert, even though he posts almost exclusively on french forums

    About 15 years ago the uncleaned coin community was startled to discover a flood of fake coins showing up in uncleaned lots. Stylistically, these were obvious forgeries, (http://www.fakeuncleanedcoins.com/) but you wouldn't know they were there until you washed off the mud covering them. Seems stupid to go through all that trouble since the coins were selling, retail, for around $1/coin, but when you consider that each coin contained around $.02 worth a metal, it must have been worth someone's time to stamp out several hundreds (thousands?) of them.
