    Mike,

Mark's photo of the reverse is superb in every respect, color, detail, and actual appearance of the coin. The obverse color on his photo is a little off. I would say that the true appearance is in between. It is not as blue as my photo, but more blue than Marks photo. The obverse is much more dark than the reverse and the luster on the obverse is definitely impaired. It is still extremely attractive and this problem is common on Lafayette Dollars.

I am going to wait a few more days before I make my final decision.

And respect returned - as I said previously, with the asking price, it seems to me that the coin has been discounted appropriately, which reinforces my opinion. For the sellers apparently do not think the coin is worth 65 money either. And it's a pretty good bet they probably only paid about $8000 for it.

    Doug,

The coin is on consignment so the seller is getting a % of the sale price. I stated to the seller that I believe the coin to be a PQ MS64 or low end MS65 with exceptional eye appeal. Dave Wnuck agreed with my assessment of the coin and presented my offer of just under $10K to the seller who accepted the offer.

I just couldn't pass on this coin. I have wanted a rainbow toned Duvall 1A or 3D for years and have waited patiently for one with the eye appeal that suits my tastes. I may have overpaid in some collector's eyes, but I paid what the coin was worth to me. That is the way I have always approached coin collecting. Price guides are just that guides. This coin has attributes that change the value of the coin versus other Lafayette Dollars IMO.

Anyway, I am extremely happy with my purchase and now have a new king to my collection. Here it is one more time.
