The Chilean Volcano and Condor Breaking Chains types were the first coins of the Chilean Republic after gaining independence from Spain in 1817. The Volcano coins, also known as 'Chile Independiente' were struck from 1817 until 1834. They were followed by the 'Condor Breaking Chains' design struck from 1838 until 1852. Both were struck in 8, 2, 1 and 1/2 Real denominations. Here is a grouping of 1/2 reales of both types. I thought they look good together: Volcanoes and Condors, iconic symbols of Chile and of the Andean countries.
