I was in England for the whole year in 1998, and I remember that they had a majority of reduced size 50p coins in circulation. I remember getting a really dark and dirty non reduced 50p coin in change once. I put it toward a card or something. That was the last and only large 50p coin I ever got during that year I was there. As far as I remember they demonitized the large coin in February, as I remember seeing it in the newspaper at the time. I got my first two pound coins from the bank late that year too, but spent them at a Burger King. They didn't seem to be very common at all then, even though they were dated 1997. When I spent them the cashier didn't have a spot to put them in her till, and she was frustrated. I assume they are quite common now in change.
