I bought this shortly before the Cud I recently posted. This is a Matron Head Large Cent. Her hair is braided and she is the Mature, Large Letter version. There were 2,425,342 minted in three styles. I bought this because of the reverse. I find it very interesting. I have had several thoughts but I'm still at a loss on how this occurred. Look at the reverse to understand this. The longer you look, the more puzzled you'll become. Any thoughts or explanations would be welcomed. The last photo shows the edge. This is part of the missing area in the third photo, about 5:30 on the coin.
Appears to be more than just lamination going on. Let's see what some of our in-house experts have to say. @JCro57, @Fred Weinberg, @mikediamond, and yes, @paddyman98
I would say it was defective before striking. "Struck on a Defective Planchet" is what I would call it
