If someone tried to sell me the 40-S with a grade over MS62, the little voice inside my head would say just walk away. After a second look, I’m still debating if it has wear or if it a weak strike. The head almost looks like wear from rubbing against others coins. IMO I would take the AU 34 over the MS 40-S because of eye appeal.

Oh, I agree completly. It has no eye appeal. Weakness is often mistaken for wear though. They are not the same thing. There are many coins or years or mints were a coin like this 40-S would be typical for a MS coin. Maybe this is so for the 40-S WL. Is this a typical strike for this particular coin? I don't know as I have not seen many MS 40-S's. The Philidelphia coins are typically pretty sharp from what I have seen.

BTW, I am one of you "old timers":D . I have been collecting coins since around 1973.

I agree that the striking deficiency on the 40-S is a detriment to it's desirability, but it is only a little below average for the date. In fact, the ANA Grading Standards book lists the 40-S as a date that is "seldom found with a good strike." I certainly agree that this is a coin that will be on the low end of whatever grade it would receive at a TPG, based on how weak the strike is and a lack of interest in such a weakly struck coin. None-the-less it is definately uncirculated, there are no breaks in luster anywhere on it.

CT, your 40-s is only slightly below average in strike based on what I have seen at work. I don't think the strike holds it back, but rather the few contact marks. Nice coins!

This is the same conclusion that I have come to based on looking at closed auctions on Heritage.

BTW, thanks all for looking at my coins and giving your opinions!
