I was finally able to add an 1823 N-2 Matron Head large cent to my collection. This is a relatively recent purchase. I did not hesitate long before pulling the trigger on this one. There are only two varieties for this year, N-1 (the overdate), and N-2 (non-overdate). I was able to find an N-1 many years ago, but the search for a suitable N-2 took me quite a bit longer. N-2 is recognized as being the scarcer of the two, specially in grades above VF with nice, non-blemished planchets. My example is mid-grade with pleasing hard surfaces and chocolate brown and tan patina. And, best of all, no surface issues. Shown here also my 1821, and 1823 N-1. The 1821 is not bad as they come and free of porosity, but has some surface blemishes at the stars and area in front of bust. Please take a stab at grading these 3 middle dates, and please show your middle-date 1816-1839 large cents if you have them! 1821, N-2. (as for the year 1823, only two varieties exist for this year) 1823, N-1. Overdate. 1823 N-2, normal date.
