I lost the thread. Oh well. So much for ROMAN numeral eh.

the curls in the hair would only leave me with this sort of subconscious tingle that something was wrong. The numbers being round, that I would ID.

The catch is, the 1921 Morgans ALWAYS look fake to me! What is the difference between the 1921 ans the 19th century versions. Is it just the procession of minting technology?

As for the '21 Morgan - they look different because they are different. They made new dies to strike these coins - it was considered at the time a "refinement" to the design.

    Hello Cointalk Board members,
I have seen fake 1921 Morgans for sale in China. I can buy fake silver crowns of many types ion China for 3 yuan each (about 40 cents each). The strategy of faking more common coins is that when the forgery is of inferior quality, more common coins will be under less scruitny, and tend to be bought by less expert collectors, than less common coins. To make money from fraud, the coin has to sell.
For fake or over graded coins sold on eBay, I encourage cointalk members to use a new strategy for their supression. You can join the Coin Forgery eBay group here
    No more spam. Understand?
which is eBay hosted, and has over 600 members. Then make a post there about any fake, suspect, fraudulent or over graded coins. Then invite whoever is bidding on them to the CFE. THis is possible because the CFE is eBay hosted, so people can be invited to the group by their eBay user ID's. Anyone is also welcome to post invites to cointalk on the CFE.
    Best Wishes,

It is very possible to find lots of these Chinese fakes of USA and Russian coins for sale on Molotok.ru, a Russian auction site. Now even early SSSR rubles are being faked, lots of people here do not know the difference because reference materials are short on supply.

Ruben, it should be really easy for you to tell the difference........Just hop the 4/5 to the 6 to Canal St. Blow $2 buying 6-10 "coins" and then never ever buy any Morgan that even remotely looks like your new "reference set". :)

    Hello lawdog,
As published by Prokopov et al, worse quality fakes can build confidence, and lead to a fall on better quality fakes. There are Chinese junk tourist fakes, then as at the last Hong Kong coin show, there are fakes which can at times routinely fool the most experienced dealers (trade dollars in that case).
