I have decided to pass on my winning golden ticket to our newest recruit to The Dark Side: @Kasia! Lots of awesome coins there to choose from, although I do have a favourite...
My pleasure entirely! "Adventure. Excitement. A jedi craves not these things." --Yoda See, the dark side is so much better!!
Thats a nice thing to do Severus Alexander. I had 2 thoughts when I entered, 1 was the #13 it is a nice chunck of a coin. 2nd was to give my pick away just as you did, with the same person in mind. Congrats to the winners, and thanks Theodosius for doing this awsome give away.
Ok everyone I choose #12 I'll let you know why and I'll PM Theo later because I'm currently headed to first hour in high school (it was a late start today). Thanks, Jacob
I think @Youngcoin made a great choice. You can never go wrong with a big hunk of ancient bronze, never!
First I want to thank @Theodosius for hosting such a generous and entertaining giveaway. I was shocked to have won and especially so since I have been looking for a nice Gordian III Antoninianus to live next to my Gordian III Sestertius. The two coins I was considering were #5 and #7. I have decided to pick #7 for the following two reasons: 1. The reverse type is a little less commonly encountered (at least in my adventures). 2. I like the toning, to me it gives the coin a little more visual appeal than the blas white Ants that re everywhere. 3. Bonus Reason: This coin was struck near the end of Gordian's short life and the militaristic reverse type makes you think about the 19 year old emperor leading his army East, never to be seen again. Historians are still not sure how Gordian died. Some think he will killed in a coup lead by Philip the Arab, others think that he was assassinated and Philip (who was innocent of the crime) was declared Emperor. But apparently Persian records tell of a battle that is not mentioned by the Romans in which the Emperor died. I guess we will never know for sure, but I love an ancient mystery.
Thank you to @Theodosius for this really great contest. And to @Severus Alexander and to @Aethelred for their willingness to let a newbie ancient collector take their spot. As the others were torn between some, so was I. Both coins chosen were really interesting pieces, but ultimately would not have been chosen by me. I was putting my decision between #4, 5, 7, 9, 10, and 13. And then I had to research to see the differences in the reverses! Even though Aethelred chose #7, I had put that one aside, as I found out more about some of the other coins reverse images. And I ultimately said no to the pond skipper, #13. At first I thought it was a horse, but it turned out to be a she-wolf under a tree with Romulus and Remus. I looked at some coins that featured this motif and found there were other artistic representations of the she-wolf that appealed to me more, so I will have to wait on that. That left #4, 5, 9, and 10, and this being a Gordian opportunity, I thus cast away #9 from my deliberation. Of the three left it almost went down to eeny-meeney-miney-moe, but not so fast! There has to be one that overall looks more splendid to my eyes and has a reverse I would really love having, admiring, and just being an overall great coin to own. And that one is (drum roll).... #4, because the reverse represents Prosperity, and has Liberalitas, the goddess of generosity and giving freely, on it. She holds a double cornucopia and abacus. I am experiencing the generosity of others and this coin I think captures that.
Such discerning taste, even among the newbies! (I think all my favourites were mentioned except for #2, which is both nice & also cool because it's a denarius. Gordian was the last to strike these in any quantity.) Congrats all, those are 3 great coins!! Great contest, @Theodosius, major kudos.
Good choices and reasoning from all the winners! I will get these out to you as soon as I can. My personal favorites are #13 because I like provincial coins and because of its size and feel in hand. I also like #2 for the emperor on horseback reverse. My thanks to everyone who participated or commented. Thanks for putting up with my wacky contest. I would be curious to hear what other choices people would have made and why. Once again I would like to say no disrespect to Gordian or his coins from my contest, if anything I think we have showcased them a little. John
My favorite is #13 same as yours, for the same reasons as you stated. And because I don't have one. I also don't think the idea as "wacky" different and a good way to show generousity.
