VERY nice coin. I've got a C and D Half Eagle but they are not as good as your coin and grade for grade cost less.
VERY nice coin. I've got a C and a D half eagle but not as good as your coin plus grade-for-grade they cost less. Oops, sorry, somehow managed to do a double post.
@Monstermommy if this is too personal of a question, just ignore it. I would love to hear how you came about this lovely dollar. Was it inherited or something that grabbed your fancy when you were coin shopping maybe?
THAT coin needs to be in an airtite yesterday. When you send it for TPG, don't expect the airtite capsule to be returned. TPG threshold is $150-200 value: worth sending in. Curious now to what it will grade...be sure to keep us in the loop...Spark
I just took another look at the posted pics... they aren't the best lighting and focus-wise, but I don't see any wear on that huge mint mark or other high spots of details... ...the fields are too dark to assess...offering a preliminary grade of MS63...it could grade better!...Spark
Being as Ive never sent a coin off for grading,Im nervous with all the terms.what is TPG,and I recently bought a yearly deal from NGC,so I'll send it there,it makes me nervous sending it away but of course I'll insure.I may have questions for you,if you dont mind...
I have only sent coins in once, to ANACS, and was not satisfied with the results. Knowing what I know now, I would have chosen different coins to be graded/attributed, because the ones I did send in did not qualify for Third Party Grading (TPG). I did not research the coins as thoroughly as I should have and ended up wasting a lot of time and money. 2 of the 5 coins submitted gave good results. In your case, I would defer to CoinTalk members who have had experience dealing with NGC, you already have a history with them and know more than I do. You will get the best advice here at the CoinTalk Forum...Spark
I'd send it Registered Mail, it is slower, but it is safer, it WILL get there, and the at the value of this coin the cost will be less. Plus if it is a MS coin Registered is the only way you could insure it for the full value. If Spark is right on the MS-62 value of $21K that is. Regular insured packages max out at $10K, Registered goes up to $50K for less money.
The info came straight off the NGC US Price Guide website...just to clarify, not being defensive. It is such an uncommon coin, it will be extremely interesting (to me, anyway) to see how it grades out. I mean, Dahlonega gold afterall... Conder101, good info...Spark
Are we sure it's real? Can you take it out of the flip (carefully) and take better pictures? Also, how did it come into your possession? That will help the experts on here. Thats a lot of money to waste on grading if it's fake. Edit - What does it weigh? It should be 1.67g.
Here is my fake 1852 D gold dollar for comparison. What I see on my coin and the OP’s coin: 1. Major die clash above the head where the outline of the D is clearly visible. 2. Major die crack on the reverse, most prominent at the D. 3. Weak top of the E in UNITED. This is a common attribute to the Chinese fake gold dollars. 4. The 2 is of a similar shape. My fake is a Chinese base metal counterfeit. Based on the similarities, I conclude that the OP’s example is as well. Also, I just got this fake yesterday, so the OP’s example can’t have been in her possession as long as she says it has been.
The coin condition does bother me somewhat, especially as Aliexpress does several of this category...whoops Type Coin just posted my concern sorry. Jim
There is a gap in the middle of the top bar of the E. When I found the other diagnostics, I naturally looked for this one and found evidence suggesting it was there
