    Good point!

I know the teller at my bank will say things like that just to get people going. The tellers are pretty educated about coins, that's there biz

Everything I've stated is what was told to me. I thought about the weight, too, but if she had her son with her and made a couple trips back to the car... well, it's perfectly feasible.

When I was talking to the Commercial Teller, she told me that she thought the other teller may still have the Indian Head Cents at her teller window. Both the Commercial Teller and I went to the other teller to find out, but she said, "Nope, I bought those also". So, as far as I can tell, this is an absolutely true story.

Don't get me wrong on this - I'm not doubting what you were told. I AM doubting if it's true.

"Maybe" she had her son with her. "Maybe" they made more than one trip.

I, for one, would not leave a few thousand halves (silver or not) sitting in my car in the first place.

Now if this is all true I'd be interested to hear just how this lady DID get all of this coin in the bank.

Then if it turns out as true - well stupid people shouldn't breed. She would be living proof.

lets see, take these old silver dollars to the bank, and get $1,000, or go 2 more miles and get over $9,700 for them. hmm, i'll take the bank, i don't want to burn the extra gas.

FIRST - it is not easy being OLD. Try it some day.

SECONDLY - she might be dead in 48 hours so maybe she doesn't CARE....

I dont have the strength to read through this a second time.. the first time has been a roller coaster of emotions... disbelief, sadness, dumfounded, I am going to just tell myself it was probably silver halves at best probably 40% kennedy's... i have to tell myself this story so i can sleep tonite ... that no way an elderly lady had that many silver dollars and tried to put them through coinstar.. even if they were her husbands & she wanted to get even she'd still get the $$ from the teller rather than giving coinstar a percentage, because every town has an ad 'we buy coins' in the paper these days...

my two cents about the $1000 of 90% silver ... because while i prefer to live in disbelief this story is entirely true I do know many people do take rolls of silver to the bank all the time .....

am i the only person who thinks the banks should have an information sheet? i.e., 'we cannot personally recommend a dealer because that would be wrong but you should know the coins and bills you are cashing in at face value are worth more?

i realize as long as they pay for it bank tellers should have the same right to it as anyone else but i think its wrong that they DONT direct these people with these huge hoards to coin dealers or bullion buyers. these people are in the position of handling money on behalf of their customers and it seems to me they take advantage. perhaps i'm just still reeling from this story ... but how does this differ from any other situation where an uninformed person is taken advantage of ?

i am just thinking about the big story in the news about universal 'taking advantage of the elderly by selling them coins at 2-3 times their value' and most people are outraged... how in the world does this differ?

$1000 morgans.... in a coinstar.... not true not true not true.....

No, that is not the business of banks to inform people that they are just silly.
They are in the business of banking, not coin collecting...besides, how would we get coins otherwise.
Come on...taking advantage of the elderly?
They told her to go elsewhere, and she didn't want to, so, the coins were fair game.

Another reason may be that they were her husband's coin collection and she was getting back at him for something really serious...

This story is a known urban legend and has appeared in books on the subject.

The usual story is that the wife is selling a "pristine 1960 Corvette" or some other valuable old car for $50 to get revenge on a cheating husband.

The original story appeared in a 1979 movie named "Time After Time", only with 19th century gold coins involved.

If she called a single coin dealer and he lowballed her, I can see an elderly person not being interested in the extra money for the hassle. The dealer could have thought she meant "Silver" Eisenhower Dollars and quoted her $1.05 a piece.

I find plenty of silver halves in circulation, you know somebody is cashing them in at face value for them to get there.

Where was it written that her husband was cheating? Maybe he was dead. And why are some of you upset at the teller for buying the coins, if it is true? Maybe the teller is a coin collector also. And wouldnt working at a bank be ideal for our hobby. Would any of you pass up buying those coins so some body else could get a crack at them? But still the lady may have been dumb. Surely the son had an idea of the coins worth. But then again I dont know of any bank with a coin star. Must be alot of meth heads in that town. LOL

I think we are pointing out that without documentation, names, dates, that this story is just not credible.
