Good questions Topher......Here's my opinion: Ans1: I'm collecting only circulation coins only but NCLT can also be included coz they are legal. Ans2: As long as any territory mints its own coin for circulation as legal tender; I'll consider it worth collecting. Ans3: Same as Ans 2 Ans4: I'll prefer more recent coins...but why not. Chinese cash coins would be more suitable for old country category as now its People's Republic of China not old China. I'll like to hear what others think bout Topher's questions.
Did i say ebay...I meant youtube. Gotta be millions of coins and millions of dollars. I myself would hate chasing that impossible goal.
If Monaco is a country, then so is Taiwan, which is much, much bigger. Sealand was declared independent by a British court some years back, and defeated Germany in a war. Hutt River Province is a sham, as is the Conch republic, which kind of issued coins during it's momentary "genuine" independence back in the '80s.
Don't think that the "country" status has much to do with the size of an area. Monaco sure is one, and Taiwan basically is one too, regardless of the official government position. That list mentioned here (TCC_country_status.pdf) has both MC and TW, even though it has its flaws (e.g. "Monaco - Coins: FR") when it comes to coins. Christian
Monaco is a member nation of the UN, Taiwan is not. One could easily exclude Taiwan based on this criteria (although I would not.) Sealand has never been declared independent. It was declared outside of the British jurisdiction, but was never recognized as a independent nation. And they never won a "war" with Germany. They held a German (who was trespassing on their "territory") until the German government negotiated his release. As they are not under the jurisdiction of any other country, there is a very grey area where they fall. The Hutt River Principality is recognized by the Australian government as a private enterprise, yet they have argued their right to secession under the Treason Act 1495. While common sense dictates that they are not a soveriegn nation, they think they've found a loophole which allows them to be, and I'm not enough of a legal expert to argue one side or the other. You see, definition of a "country" or "nation" is very difficult, so each person needs to set their own criteria, and arguments can be made to include some countries and exclude others. If you like it and can afford it, then that should be good enough!
I would say, if the coin was used to buy something, whether it was issued by a country, kingdom, rebel province, occupied territory, etc, should count. But to make the project realistic, there should be a cap on how far back you go. Try everything back to 1900 and see how long that takes. I would disqualify coins issued for the purpose of selling (as in marketing of the coin itself to collectors or metal investors) or propaganda pieces. There are some 'independent' entities that have issued coins only for these purposes. Sealand may have issued coins, but just try going to a store in Sealand to buy something.
I agree with you buddy......Starting from 2000 is a nice idea........the coins of highest denominations gonna cost almost at par.......inexpensive way of finishing collection....
Hi Jonathon. Here is a link that might help you and others as you look for world coins.http://worldcoingallery.com/index.htm Bruce.
Then you would have to count the Hutt River Principality by that definition, as that currency is accepted within the confines of their "border". I only point that out to show how undefined these definitions really are.
here is my Hutt River page...I also have a few of the bills and stamps...they just release some new coins, the older ones are getting harder to find these days. http://www.cachecoins.org/huttriver.htm
My favorite phony country is The Republic of Minerva, which only exists at low tide. I've seen the five dollar coin for sale at shows on rare occasions. (don't have one though). Krouse has a catalogue of things like that.
I saw a few Minerva coins for sale on ebay though I wasnt very fond of the look of the coins so I passed. I have the catalog you are talking about. Its called Krause Unusual World Coins Catalog. Mr. Tom Maringers Shire Post minted coins are in there... I thought it was cool they had coins minted up for the movie Coming to America with Eddie Murphy as Prince Hakeem of Zamunda....
Wow thanks for all the comments guys. I've been at the beach for the last few days so I haven't been able to reply. But while I've been gone my girl friend picked up about 100 random world coins for a few dollars at the flea market and we are going through them soon. The way I'm going to collect right now is just one coin from every officially recognized country. Maybe later I'll expand it to include a coin from each specific period in every countries history, but right now just working on any single coin thats from each country.
I can tell you the recommended price for them when I get home as I have the price guide for such coins. As for finding them, I see some on ebay here and there, otherwise...I have no idea.
I finally worked up a list of the countries I have represented in my collection. I made some personal calls on what should be included, kept separate etc. I don't actually have my German coins organised under the categories listed here but I do have several coins from each category... Algeria Angola Argentina Armenia Australia Austria Bahamas Bangladesh Barbados Belgium Belize Bermuda Bohemia and Moravia Bolivia Brazil British Caribbean Territories British Honduras British Virgin Islands British West Africa Bulgaria Burma Cambodia Canada New Foundland Cayman Islands Ceylon Chile China, Empire China, Chekiang province China, Hunan province China, Hupeh province China, Kianguan province China, Kwangtung province China, People's republic Colombia Cook Islands Costa Rica Croatia Cuba Curacao Cyprus Czech Republic Czechoslovakia Denmark Dominican republic East Africa East Caribbean States East germany Ecuador Egypt El Salvador Estonia Ethiopia Fiji Finland France French Indochina French Polynesia French Somaliland Germany, Empire Germany, Weimar Republic Germany, Third Reich Germany, Federal Reublic Ghana Gibraltar Great Britain Greece Guatemala Guernsey Guyana Haiti Honduras Hong Kong Hungary Iceland India, British India, Republic Indonesia Iran Iraq Ireland Isle of Man Israel Italy Jamaica Japan Jersey Jordan Kenya Kuwait Laos Lebanon Liberia Libya Luxembourg Macao Malawi Malaya Malaya and british Borneo Malaysia Malta Mauritius Mexico Mexico (Chihuahua) Morocco Mozambique Muscat and Oman Nepal Netherlands Netherlands Antilles Netherlands East Indies New Zealand Nicaragua Niger Nigeria Norway Pakistan Palestine Panama Papua New Guinea Paraguay Peru Philippines Poland Portugal Prussia Reunion Rhodesia Romania Russia St helena and Ascension St Pierre and Miquelon San Marino Saudi Arabia Seychelles Sierra Leone Singapore Slovakia Soloman Islands Somalia South Africa South korea Spain Sri Lanka Straits Settlements Sudan Suriname Sweden Switzerland Syria Taiwan Tanzania Thailand Trinidad and Tobago Tunisia Turkey United Arab Emirates Uruguay Vatican City Venezuala Vietnam Yugoslavia Zambia Zimbabwe It took a long time to type all that.
