Hello all, I found this wheat cent that has an indentation/chip/missing material on Lincoln's shoulder. I didn't see anything particularly similar on error-ref; has anyone seen something similar? Environmental or a material defect of some sort? Thanks.
Your coin looks like a struck through foreign object. Very irregular shaped hole and not a smooth interior. Can you post reverse photo? This is sometimes hard to define on a well circulated coin.
Look under Lamination (Planchet Errors) over at Error-ref.. Either struck through as mentioned or a lamination. Definitely not a (die) chip. But I know what you meant.
I had not thought of a lamination. A lamination defect will almost always have a feathered edge at some point of the defect. Looking at the two coins gives you an idea of why these types of defects can be hard to determine.
Nice find Steve! funny you post that similar example Paddy. Watched a show on Discovery that showed a German Tank called the "elephant" that was used in 1944. Coin looks like a commemorative lol! Abes got a trunk!
