You must put one of these tets on the tie: Or maybe it would make a nice tie clip. Edit to add a big bronze (size of a US silver dollar).
I only ever wear a tie under duress (and haven't had to in almost a decade), but I thought I would chip in with a few coins since this thread seems to want for contributions ...
The tie is going to be awesome. So many wonderful coins in this thread that you just know the final result will be a masterpiece. I just hope @TIF accepts greenbacks and doesn't demand payment in denarii or drachms.
There are nice coins and less nice coins. There are good photos and less good photos. However there is one more thing to consider here. There are great photos of nice coins that just won't reproduce as well on a fabric as others. We need bold contrasts and details. It will be hard to tell a VF from an EF on a tie size transfer but it will be hard to see a coin with low contrasts and fine micro details that get hidden in the weave. CT allows posting ten images with a post so I'll offer ten that may be a bit different. It ill be impossible for TIF to select any reasonable number from the dozens submitted already (not to mention a few of her coins and the ones she knows from our higher end members). Faced with an impossible what is Sophie to do?
@TIF I do not know how you will ever go thru all these and pick out the few you want for the tie. What a daunting task. I do not envy you, but I am looking forward to the end result. Heck, I don't wear ties any longer, but I just might buy one of these to be buried in one day. Nah, that would be a waste. No one would see it. Maybe I'll wear it to someone else's funeral?
Still ancient Shah of Persia Peroz I r. AD 459-484 Alexander the Great (you might have a better one) Alchon Huns everyone one needs an ancient cone head. (c. AD 420) There should be at least a small place for an Indian poet and play write. AD 606-647. Harshavardhana (b.590 AD) If your going to select only the very very ancient you certainly need a Vimsatika or a Shatamana and may be a Karshapana of the earliest kind. Something of the Buddha would be great as well.
Sorry for the delayed replies. Work was a killer yesterday. I've had another request for a scarf, so I may do this even though it means a lot more hand-sewing (scarves have hand-sewn rolled hems). As the project progresses I'll offer some options for scarf size/shape. Personally, I want one but with a white background (which will be unprinted because the material is white). Since the fabric is printed on one side, if the black background design is used the unprinted side would show to some extent, depending on how the scarf is tied or worn. It would probably look better with a white background. Hmm, if there is is time I will make extras but the fabric is expensive, so there isn't much room for profit without making the tie very expensive. Then again, have you prices on some "ordinary" men's neckties? @New Windsor Bill, do you own any of these coins? I'm using pictures of coins owned by CoinTalk members. Oh, didn't I tell you? For payment you send me the coins used on the tie. Kidding, of course. As usual, Doug has some good points. The image quality was actually quite fine when printed on a polyester knit fabric used for my and @ancientcoinguru's jacket. I don't yet know how sharp they will reproduce on silk-- probably less sharp since the fabric is lighter weight and less densely woven. Also, I may offer the option of silk vs. polyester because of the extra cost of silk. The most important part of Doug's post: I am not seeking only EF and higher coins but I do need EF+ images. This is important. Some of you have posted wonderful coins I'd love to put on the tie, but the images are just not good enough. As I go through the posts over the next week or two, selecting and editing images as I go, I'll PM those whose images just don't work as-is (asking for a reshoot for better focus, better lighting, size, or whatever). I want the design to have members' favorite coins, and ultimately a wide swath of ancient coin types. Here's a preliminary timeline. Because of the time involved with editing the images, it will probably take a week or two before I have the fabric design ready. I'll post it here along with a list of the members/coins. I'll need to order a yard to check quality and suitability of the fabric before comitting $$ to more yardage. It will take ~2-3 weeks to receive the fabric once ordered. So, that's ~2 weeks for design prep, ~3 weeks for test fabric, then another ~3-4 weeks to order all of the fabric, then the real work begins. I'm glad everyone is excited about this but bear in mind that as usual, I really have no idea what I am doing . I've read some tutorials about making fine neckties, watched some videos, etc. Pretty sure I can do it, but I'll need to make a test tie before ordering the expensive fabric. It looks like once I get in the groove, it will take ~2 hours to make one tie and that doesn't count all of this photo editing and design time and other activities needed to get ties in the mail. Quality ties have considerable hand-sewing and that takes longer than machine sewing.
I've given that considerable thought and tried various sizes on the mockup. I might make each coin slightly larger, but to me it looked a bit clownish with large coins. Personally, I think it looks more elegant with the smaller coins arranged in tidy diagonal rows. The other consideration for coin size is the desire to include so many coins. Related, when cutting the fabric for individual ties, different portions of the design will end up on any given tie's blade (tie blade: the wide part that shows when worn). For members who end up ordering a tie, hopefully this serendipitous aspect of design will allow me to send ties with a given member's coin (or coins) on the part that shows when the tie is worn .
