It looks great now that it has toned, but in my opinion a clean looking coin like the original post just looks awful to me. Nothing personal meant about my post.
I agree, I loved being able to see the details, but cringed at the color. It has been in a pile of coins for 2 1/2 years...
The linseed oil helped a lot. As I am sure you are aware there are some products used to apply an artificial patina .. after all that has been done to the coin why not? Can just call it a "restoration". I've done it on one coin I had to strip down to the bare metal due to bronze disease. Just noted the harrowing experience and steps taken on the flip. Not that I would ever want to sell it... we've been through so much together!
Are you saying that the linseed oil made no difference to the coin's appearance? Just not sure what the timing has to do with it?
That is correct, it looked 99% the same before the linseed oil. The oil perhaps added a bit of gloss, kind of like Renaissance Wax.
Ah... understood. I am just very surprised the coin changed appearance that dramatically in just 2.5 years. It looks very well... nice result.
Hurray! I would most definitely love it if others used this thread, too, to showcase their efforts. I very much so appreciate this input and all the other information others in this thread have given me on the different methods. I will check in on the coins today! Oh... well please don't do that! I think every time I've mixed up NaOH (for chem) I cough a little as well... interesting.
Oh my goodness! When you said coins will repatinate over time, I did not expect that great of a result. That is just amazing. I too was not the greatest fan of the patina-less cleaned version, but I liked the details on the cleaned one much more. Now, you've got both! I do have some NaOH, but I am terrified of it every time I open the bottle. It will likely only be a last resort.
You all are probably going to be surprised to hear that my Dad and I just removed the coins today. Lol. Things got a little busy and did not have time to take them out! Now they are out, and I will get pictures once dry. They did improve.
