I'm really not being argumentative here - just trying to answer your question. But if you were to try the method I described using a piece of leather - you'd see for yourself. The copper layer is still there, fully intact - but flattened out.
Nos My point in asking for the info that was requested is this, If the coin weight is correct then the cause is in the strike , If the weight is off then it may be as you said a thin planchet(although I doubt this explaination) if it is correct Then the explanation given by Mikediamond is more than likely to be the correct one. It also had this as an effect once you weigh and measure the coin mine and your understanding would be more complete ,,, arm yourself with knowledge ,,we are all trying to learn !! Thanks Rick
I have to agree with GD on several points. Without these specific coin(s) in hand for examination, pictures can only offer conjecture, regardless if we have a coin similar to Divines or not. Also, debate the facts to no end, not emotions, i.e agree to disagree. As far as mint or post-mint, personally, I also lean towards the side of the mint being the cause, only because 've come across dozens of more recent lincolns showing the same kind of details missing, in varying degrees, and in exactly the same regions. Sort through $25 of lincoln's from your local bank and you'll stand a high chance of doing the same. An " E PLURIBUS" missing here, an "of" missing there...Lincolns details being a bit flattened in appearence. Minor weak struck, struck through, die wear, filled die, or whatever you to attribute it to, IMHO they are not worth much until extreme (like all but the faintest ghost of lincoln remaining) . But if you find one interesting, by all means keep it. To me, that's what coin collecting is, and should always be, all about.....collecting what you like. Hey, I kept an UNC one where Lincolns bowtie is all but gone, just because I found it interesting. One final thought for Divine, I know your pretty new to the forum, and may feel you've touch off a small fire storm. Don't let it daunt you from asking further questions. I personally appreciate your inquisitive posts and have learned more with each one.
See Law Dog you know what we are talking about. A year ago when I was on my lincoln penny extravaganza, I would go to about 5 banks on a Saturday and get 10 or 20 rolls per bank. I found some really cool stuff but this was the only error coin I found. Now since you have seen such similiar coins, if there was a serial coin alterer out there dont you guys think he would have changed the position by now?? What are the odds that three of us would encounter the same type of error and all in the exact same place if it were not an error of sorts!
Something to think about - if genuine error coins are selling for even $3 - $4 each - and these errors could be easily faked - do you really think people would NOT do it ?
See that is just the thing. They can NOT be easily faked! I showed you what a man made error coin looks like! Can you people not see the difference?
What you showed was how to damage a coin with a hammer, someone who decided to set up and fake these types of errors would be a little more sopisticated about it, what if I was to tell you that I could make 75 of these coins an hour on a roll pin press? Just because you cant see the potential doesnt mean that it doesnt exist, the simple fact is just about every error that has a premium has been faked by someone in some manner . Thank You Rick
Oh my Lord. Why are you all so against our coins? Look I brought it to a penny expert who has been collecting coins 3x longer than I have been alive and it clearly was not smashed with a hammer. I will super size my scans and show all of you!!
NOS - Nobody is against your coins. Genuine errors of this type DO EXIST - that is a fact. But it is also a fact that these have been and are faked. It is also a fact that they very difficult to tell from the real thing. We are not saying YOUR coin is a fake. Only that such fakes exist. These are the facts - that's all.
Well I'm tired of repeating myself so I'm just gonna make some super large scan for you all to look at.
I enjoyed seeing those pictures! If I had a local coin person I trusted...or even knew...I'd go. But I don't, so... You'll scan bigger than mine? Easier comparison...gracias!
Well I just took a look at your scans again and they are pretty big but I still think it is good to post another coin with the same type of error on it for comparison.
Thank you! I'm finding the debate fascinating, and a better learning experience than asking any single person (who may or may not know what s/he is talking about, and may or may not have his/her own reasons for whatever they say). And you're gentlemen about it...no name-calling! That's more than a lot of public forums achieve. I'm relatively quiet because I can only post what I know, and I don't have the background or experience to contribute more than questions and comments reflecting general, non-coin logic. Also, at this point, my computer's Search Companion can't find any files on my C drive, though they're there. I've got some major troubleshooting to do! I hope it would be taken care of yesterday, but the problems seem to be multiplying.
Well I am keeping things very clean and trying to be nice as much as possible even though I want to lash out at some of these guys because I don't want to alienate myself from here or get banned as it is a good forum. Now...about these types of coins! I found a guy on ebay who says he has been dealing with error coins for a notable amount of time. I am gonna email him and show him the pics and see what he says!
I think that's a good way to go. Nobody here has anything but their opinions, really. Some are more educated than others, but nobody's always right, especially when evaluating photos. The grease thing sounds logical...and they're curiosities, whatever they are. If I were considering simulating an error, I'd choose a more valuable one, myself. How many theoretical individual $4 coin sales would it take to make it worth creating this error, if it were possible to do so as precisely & uniformly as these three cents? (rhetorical only) Regarding the guy on eBay...try to find out about his reputation by searching with Google before you take his word as gospel. I hope you don't mind that bit of advice.
Yah see but some of you goofs just wont hear the truth! Well I have received a response from the very knowledgeable expert in error coinage and I have sent him scans so taken together with what he says and what I have presented it can be considered Gospel! You tell them survivor!
So what makes his word and your word gospel? And why is he an expert? And even if it is not directed at me, stop the name calling because you are beginning to iritate me.
Ohhh please, "goofs" is not name calling I tell you what. You should obviously hear what name calling can be. I have toned down what my normal words on here normally would be so much and that saying "goofs" would be considered pollite okay with most forum talk on the internet. You haven't posted on this thread before but I am guessing you are siding with the critics. This guy is very knowledgeable and has been dealing with errors for over 40 years! What more do you people want?! To hear it from some guy who has been dealing with errors for 80!? How about a hundred!!! Tomorrow I will post what he says because he makes quite a lot of sense.
