Hiya Thanks for letting me join I am a complete novice and you all seem to be experts Having a clear out and came across this coin, thought i would do some research but still none the wiser if real or not, the weight is confusing me but then i read that it may be from a shipwreck? which would make it deteriorate It weighs 17g and measures approx 37mm...Pics below Bought it many years ago from a shop in Cornwall for a couple of quid Many thanks
Great coin, so how much did you pay for it ? also the condition looks really good So i would be a little suspect on the actual authenticity, just my two cents..
Welcome to CT. This coin should weigh about 27g, it wouldn´t be so perfect with that amount of loss. Your coin seems cast, not minted and I think there is a brocken hook on the right of the edge, almost like a soldering for jewelry. My opinion is that it was precisely that: a cast piece for jewelry.
Welcome to the forum..i looked and bid on a few reales and this one has earmarks of a replica..afa looks and weight go.. but hey.. happens to the best of us and if it helped get you interested in old and ancient coins, well worth the couple of quid.
As a comparison here is what an authentic 8 reales of Carlos III looks like. As others have said, it is a cast replica.
sure..one is worth half as much as two ..next question >< (O i'm sucha smart a**) i really don't know.. more than a bob i reckon..
Ill be damned if I recognize Decimal Day! 1 quid = 20 bob. To answer your question @mpcusa a quid is slang for 1 pound sterling, which was worth 240 pence pre 1971, and afterwards worth 100 pence.
There are plenty of beautiful, unworn coins that are much older. That is not really a valid reason to be doubtful of authenticity.
