Hello all, I recently found this sweet 8 escudo from the local coin shop. I paid $1900 and thought it was a steal. I can’t ID the mint mark and assayer. It seems to be in VF condition. What would you guys value this at? Hopefully I didn’t get fleeced. thanks Larry
The value you see on the link is an average of realised sales. None listed for 1794, you can search e--bay sold items for your coin and see what comes up.
It’s been hard to find any info online about this specific year mint and grade. What would you guys value this at? And grade it at?

Luckily NGC pricing typically isn't accurate. Judging by other Santiago 8Es that have sold, you did fine.
You did fine, in my opinion. You hardly ever see one of these for sale for less than $2K, regardless of the date and mint.
NGC's price guide is.probably the best that's out there, but it's not very good. There aren't enough sales to have an accurate price guide. It's better than the old printed books that might be updated every decade (and usually by a % or few $, no real updates)... https://www.coinarchives.com/w/resu...udos+santiago+1794&s=0&upcoming=0&results=100
It could even be a few points higher. The bust is the high spot and most noticeable. Add to that, most were not that well struck. The mints were going for quantity over quality. I tend to grade these by the legends.
Well you paid up for the 200+ year cool factor. If you were looking for melt, those aren't the ones to buy. History in your hand...$1900 I'd say you did good. Is there a bit of Biogeochemical Growth on the reverse? Attributed to which shipwreck and how long it's been under water add to the story.
