76-D LMC: RPM or die chip?

I'm not usually looking at modern coins for varieties, so I could use some perspective here. :D What is the extension below the "D"--a die chip? I'm assuming the "loop" (dark arrow) inside the D is just metal pushed around from damage to the MM--correct?

Looks like a peel downward from the mint mark.

Thanks Coop...I had not considered that; my attention is usually on IHC and other 19th C. varieties. :)

Chip or lamination. Also, Incredible photos of that coin. Half the time when people (by people I mean myself sometimes) post photos that close up they look like blurry pixels.

Yes I would say it's a chip or medal flake that yes of all places folded over the mm D. Looking at it the flake folded over filling the D then over layer the mm. Pretty neat. This kind of stuff really kills me. When you think you seen it all something like this surfaces. What do you think the odds would be on that flake being overlay where it is?

Thanks...I have a good macro setup and system for shooting tiny details on coins.
And nice diagram Coop! I can totally see what you're driving at--thanks! :)
