100% agree. For the re-holder, I asked for the fancy "scratch-resistant" holder for $5 more, which is supposed to be optically superior to anything else NGC or PCGS does. Plus the NGC photos will be taken outside the plastic. Sadly, I have several slabs where the scratches are almost unbearable. At some point when I have more of my Type Set complete, I will get them all re-slabbed (except for the doily). But that is many years away.
I think it has a great looking Cameo effect and shows it well. You were one lucky coin buyer! Good for you!
I have a group of coins that I want to get re-holdered. Some have scratches and others I just want in the edge view holder. I might send them in this fall.
You can used the stuff that they use to polish car headlights to polish the slabs. I understand it works great
I tried on NGC slab, and did not have great results. Other people have good results. Depends on the slab, depends on the scratches, and it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Hiding scratches from the naked eye and hiding scratches from a well-lit, high resolution photograph are two very different animals.
I use a Dremel on low speed with a muslin wheel and there is almost nothing I cannot get to be invisible to a camera or an eye.
Coin arrived in SARASOTA, FL 34230, not quite into the hands of NGC yet. I left them a note to call me, so we'll see. update: NGC now has it in their hands, let the waiting game begin....
UPDATE Coin has been graded 68 Cameo Accent Hair, and I have the initial (bad) NGC photos to prove it! I dont have any emails from NGC yet, but the status is listed as "Finalized/Imaged/Shipped" and value of $1,500. I hope that NGC didn't forget to take the better pictures I requested (and paid for). NGC OLD cert page NGC NEW cert page So freaking happy about this! Helps offset a bad-neighbor nightmare I am going through right now.
Anyone know if there is a way to determine the fancier "scratch resistant holders" from the normal holders? (besides intentionally scratching the slab).
Found this: "At NGC our encapsulation department can tell the difference between the scratch resistant and regular holders simply by the feel. The scratch-resistant holders have a more slick feel. They handle thousands of these holders, and it may be difficult for most people to tell the difference. Permanent marker (such as a Sharpie) does not stick to a scratch-resistant holder -- it will bead up when you try to write on the plastic. You may not want to try this on your holders, but if you do I would suggest that you have a tissue nearby to wipe off the permanent marker immediately or it could stain the plastic (especially on the regular holders). If you submit your coins under World Standard they will be returned in a scratch-resistant holder." Ref: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=4753504
