The NGC population in MS66 is 103/7, that is not common. Furthermore, just because you have some with a stronger strike than this one does not mean that this one has a weak strike for that year. The coin in the OP has an above average strike for this year. Most don't have complete details of Monticello, none have complete hair detail, and most have very little step detail. This is my 1955 MS66 and I would rather have his, which has a similar strike and better surface quality than mine. If you have multiple coins with better strikes and surfaces, I would like to see them.
I really like the wood grain effect that yours has. Wow! Thank you for sharing. I like the Target toning.
These 2 coins were produced at different mints. I don't think you can compare those strikes, dies, etc.
As I understand it...all the nickels from 1955 are known for poor strikes. At least that is what I have read. I could be mistaken.
That may be true. But how can coins be compared that are minted 1500 miles apart with different machines, dies, etc. ?
My bad, I guess my head got stuck on the title of the thread. I thought we were talking about 55 Philly nickels. I really can't understand how I missed all the conversation about the D/S mintmark. That said, the quality of the 55-D is only marginally better than that of the 55 Philly. Here is my 1955-D NGC MS66. I still contend that the OP's coin has a better overall strike and quality than my MS66.
I would imagine that a D/S would get a harder evaluation by a tpg. Even with that being said. My intent is to pass this coin on to my children. It might get a CAC sticker in the future. I like the old soap box slabs.
In fairness, mine is a D/S, it just isn't designated as such. There were 10 different dies that yielded the D/S mintmark with some being more prominent than others. If you like the old ANACS slabs than by all means keep it the way it is, but if you want the coin to achieve maximum value when you leave it to your kids, you should consider trying for the upgrade with NGC. The problem is that you need 5 coins for a submission anyway unless you piggyback with someone else.
