Today marks my wife's and my 50th wedding anniversary. It was a snowy March 23, 1968 when we said our nuptials. I suppose one might say we have beaten the odds to have lasted this long.

In celebration of this momentous occasion, here are events in the Roman Empire that transpired in 50 AD:

    - Cologne is raised to the status of a city.
    - Romans learn the use of soap from the Gauls.
    - Utrecht is founded, and a Roman fortification (castellum) is constructed at the Rhine border in the present-day Netherlands.
    - Claudius adopts Nero.
    - In Judea a Roman soldier seizes and burns a Torah-scroll. Procurator Cumanus has the culprit beheaded, calming down the Jews and delaying for two decades the outbreak of their revolt.[1]
    - In Britain, governor Publius Ostorius Scapula begins his campaign against the recalcitrant Silures of south Wales, who are led by the former Catuvellaunian prince Caratacus. London (Londinium), Exeter (Isca Dumnoniorum), Tripontium (near modern Rugby) and the fort of Manduessedum (near modern Atherstone) are founded (approximate date).
    - Roman emperor Claudius appoints Agrippa II governor of Chalcis.
    - Romans build a wooden bridge across the Thames in the London area.

Just so this is about coins:

Congrats, Bing! I hope you and the wife enjoy the day and have many happy years ahead together. 50 years is mighty impressive and a thing to celebrate.... come to think of it, that's longer than the reigns of the all the ~20 emperors of the Crisis of the 3rd Century put together!

WOW, congratulations @Bing on the 50 years of bliss! That is fantastic!

Nice Nero Drachm... you sure you want to post HIM as an Anniversary Coin? :D :D :D

Here is a coin of his mother... not the best looking, but knocks out a hole-filler :D for my Roman Ruler Placeholder sub-focus collection.

Yeah, I hear ya. I would have liked to post a new MA legionary denarius, but, alas, not yet. The reason for the Nero coin was that in 50 AD he was adopted by Claudius.

Congratulations Bing!!! I hope you're able to celebrate like an Augustus and Augusta (early ones, not late usurpers).:):)

Congratulations to you and your wife!

    That is a big milestone!

I am more likely to be celebrating my 50th wedding to 50 different women than to last 50 years with the same one. :) :) :)

Ok, just kidding, Mrs Theodosius is the perfect partner for me, ie she is able to put up with me.

    :)
